I bought one for that intent but I keep ending up by playing with it and running the battery pack dead!
What I did on mine was tomount a cup hook low on the transom then used one of the suppliedballs and line to connect to the hookusing a fishing line swivel. I drove around thedead boat until the ball snagged around therudder then pulled it in.
It doesn't have a ton of power but pulled my .12 and .21 monos in.

I use mine as a recovery boat just fine. make sure you have an extra battery as Ron stated, the battery lasts about 7 minutes at full "play"
I bought a cheap 7 dollar walmart fishing rod and tied it to the back of the zigzag. Theres nowhere to tie it so youll need to mount an eye screw to the transom or some sort of tie down. make sure you have a steel leader hooked to the zigzag and then tie the line to the leader. This will prevent it from getting cut on props and sharp rudders.
Just run it out to the boat and do a lap around it, then reel it in.
That simple.
Edit: sorry ron, i didnt real all of your post. Looks like we did the same thing...

You replace the prop and shaft as it's molded together. There isn't much holding it in place, just a silicone coupler.

the ZigZag works great as a recovery boat. We recovered a nitro seaducer that was waaay out there with it. Took a few tries at first, but we got it down now.
