Oregon scientific offer a few models that are self contained and splashproof. Uses 4xAAA batteries and an SD Memory card. Sound is decent quality. I recommend modifying the mount to use suctioncups to ensure it is a little vibration isolated (depending on your powerplant type). Mine is 35mm in diameter and 140mm long. The newer ones look to be smaller. I have not used the newest version so cannot comment on if it is any better but I am happy with how mine have worked thus far.
