For those interested in this particular class of Tug, please visit http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/for...php?board=95.0
By the way, there are links from theMBM site to other sites that have Springer information.

RE: Springer Tugs
Still adding things to my springer...
Just built this up on a whim...
Still needs control wheels, and a flat panel monitor, and a chair.
...A chart table, and a starboard side jump seat near the door.

Hmm, I wonder if I can light up all the dials.. [>:]

The crew will hate you.

Of course it helps if you don't use cheap radio equipment...

I think I'm missing something here??? Why the "hay bail" toss?
I think I'm missing something here??? Why the "hay bail" toss?
Because We can...
A lot of scale modelers joke about "Launching for Distance"
Few are actually confident in their boats to take such a pounding.
A springer is a good confidence builder in many aspects.
It teaches all the aspects of a good scratch built model.
From hull to superstructure,... From soldering to lighting,...
From running gear to super detailing...
And Anyone can build one. [8D]

Hi Guy's
got some more done to the tug. it is a neat little tug. Umi your wheel house is awesome. I am not super detailing this tug. but if I do another I will most certianly try to match yours. have you started your hull yet? all the best craig

RE: Springer Tugs
I built my hull up a year ago last August. At the same time, I built up
an extra hull as a raffle prize.
Here are a few pics from the build.
They are quick easy little boats, but you can practice all sorts of
building techniques on them.
Yours is looking really good.

Hi Umi
Once I glue my deck on I will open them up. it is a fun build. it would be easy to go overboard with detail. this one has a purpose tho. so nothing fancy this time around. craig

Hi Guy's
billy came over and got his springer tug today. he was very happy. mine is close to being seaworthy. but I have some scrapping and sanding to do first. then I will do a float test in the tub. . craig

RE: Springer Tugs
These are a pretty cool little project. I must admit I had a rude awakening to there exsistance ! Somehow I stumbled onto Umi's video launch...And I was sitting there thinking " What the!" ha ha
So I found the thread, and have been looking around at the pictures and information. Its a pretty nice little boat with no limit to options ...
One thing I did wonder, I realize the class has a very tight size guideline. Has anyone built a huge version scaled up? maybe 48 inch long or so? I wondered whether the buoancy versus ballast thing would be feasible? Sorry if these are old questions that I have missed over the boats development ..
They are all pretty sharp from the tug versions to the mini aircraft carriers, and everyone seems to be having fun !

RE: Springer Tugs
mine is 22 inches long, if you want it bigger go to kinkos and enlarge it. but at 48 inches, you are looking at a ton of ballast. get a car battery. all the best craig

RE: Springer Tugs
I am not sure if this has been done, or maybe it is common practice somewhere .. But it looks like this would be a cheap easy route to go with a boat such as the springer..if built bigger? Excuse the very rough sketch my old program doesn't really have a straight line tool. I think I get the point across with enough info to understand it though.

RE: Springer Tugs
I used a drill motor on my 6th scale tiger tank. it goes about 5 mph. so this may not spin the prop very fast. rule of thumb is take a 10,000 rpm motor and gear it down 3-1. hobby lobby motors are the best. you get the gear box and all. but hey, give it a try. it would be a good source for a cheap motor and gearbox. craig

RE: Springer Tugs
The nice thing is you get a speed control if its a variable speed drill, and you would have a high and low speed setting, with possibly the ability to use the reverse switch ...

RE: Springer Tugs
Glad people enjoy the video, I try to keep the "fun" in model boating.

RE: Springer Tugs
Nice work, If I am seeing it right you pulled a mold, poured a clear type piece which is illuminated completly from the inside, then you paint out the NON lit areas around the guages. that is definately easier than multiple light sources. And will look great when its up and running.
