Default What is a paint job worth?

Just finished painting this for a customer. Boat is one of the 50" fiberglass deep V's that I've been building. Paint is House of Kolor Neon Yellow with silver pearl additive in the 1'st layer of clearcoat followed by 2 additional layers straight clear. What would you think is a fair price? By the way, this man already paid in full, so was wondering if I'm just being fair to myself for the next ones. Many thanks.

Default RE: How much would you be willing to pay for this paint job?

I would pay, based on T and M, X$ per hour + cost of paint. What you think your time is worth + cost. PS looks great,I like it Larry

Hmmmmm, a fair price depends on how much work was involved. Did you prep the boat? How long did it take?

There is nothing rough about that paint job it's the flake that gives it that look if you take a look at the clear over the black it's like a mirror I think it's a top job [sm=thumbup.gif] Next time you come to australia let me know you can come around and paint my car

It's a very simple paint job. I would say $200 bucks.

I paid $150.00 for a body shop to paint my Sport 40 and that was Ford Titanium yellow with a clear-coat.
Big name painters like Dean Werges charge a lot more, $350.00 and up for a single color and the boat has to be ready to shoot. Dean can't leave well enough alone though as he has to add a little something extra, usually subtle. Seeing how you've been hanging around Aeromarine you've probably seen his work so I really don't have to tell you about it. Ask Remy what he paid!

The hull was painted very wet. I am an experienced painter and that hull is smooth as silk with no orange peel. Wetsanding and buffing would be a waste of time. the "roughness" you think you see is the reflection of the pearl additive thats trapped in the clearcoat assuming your speaking of the hatch picture. Take a look at the pictures below and tell me how rough it is!

I was thinking $200 to $250 on top the hull price for a basic solid color. Anything extra such as the pearl, or metalliac, or a 3 step paint job would obviously be more depending on the cost. heck, I recently painted an upper deck with a paint that cost me almost $300 for only 4oz of paint! Check out PPG's flip/flop paints, very cool, but wow expensive. That customer know the prices already and had no problem paying that kind of premium. The stripes on this neon yellow hull didn't take long to add and it really is a basic paint job. The pearl makes the neon pop and pictures in no way do justice for the effect thats produced. Thanks for your input guys.

I know Remmy pays a hefty price at AM for his photo opportunity paint jobs. It's great work, but not smooth when seen in person. They all have sharp tape edges and lots of orange peel. Especially in the "Rock It" Flintstone Apache thats on the front shelf of his store. For the price I'm sure he pays, seems as though a little extra wetsanding would go a long way. I still wish I had thoes airbrushing skills and the designers creativity. I have pictures of just about all AM's "show boats" that I've secretly taken for my personal collection somewhere. Lots of great ideas floating around in that shop!

**Oops, just realized I hit "edit" on that post and not "reply"...just fixed. Sorry about that, just came back from a night out and very tired when I wrote that! Here was my reply.......

Thats a deal.[sm=thumbup.gif] Been painting cars and airplanes for years. Thats what's basically paid my way through college years back. Worked at a paint shop that mostly painted race cars and airplanes along with lots of custom work.

Ron, thanks for the reply. Guess it depends who is doing the work. Just out of curiosity, I took one of these hulls recently to a body shop and was quoted about $300 to $350 for a basic basecoat/clearcoat job.

Macleod, anytime! Thanks for the compliment.

I apprediate your all's feedback, sounds like I was right in the ballpark.

I used to do my own custom paint work until osme idiot drove over the top of my boat. Dicko, if you have the same situation you'll be calling them a lot worse! It seems like you should have painted a big target on it as the already ugly boats don't get hit. I've seen hulls where it looks like the owner painted it with a roller and duct-taped the racing rash that won heats.

There were some ugly boats at the last race I was at but who cares what they look like, as long as they cross the finish line first!

The guys at the club have already given me heaps of flack about being a target. last race meet I parked it right on bouy 1 & had 2 boats T bone right next to me. One boat suffered a nice hole, the other lost 2 strakes. I held my breath for a good few seconds.

The green is Holden (Chevy GM green in the states i guess) and the gold is from Ford.

Default RE: What is a paint job worth?

[8D]Just to stay on thread I say that is a $200 paint job.........
But here is an idea for others to try, we are having one of the graphic places that do 'wraps' on full size vehicles for advertiseing etc. do some custom wraps on our boats. The neat thing is if you get it damaged they have the file on storage so you can fix/re-do the boat. Many of the full scale boats you see in Hot Boats or Powerboat mags. have this done to them. They run in salt or fresh water and it seems to hold up ok. We are just rying it out. The pics are of a couple of Expresscraft race vees, 40" hull. Yellow one is for our shop and has 'carbon fibre' and flag etc., other hull is 'barbed wire' and flames etc.; price for a custom wrap on this size hull is $75-$100 retail. Larger hulls with more complex application (cowls, hatches etc.) will be in the $150 - $300 range. I'm having a 'Thunderboat' hull done with the mahogany woodgrain etc. ..... s/b cool.
Anyway, check out your local graphics shops and see what they can do..........
Sorry for the poor quality, used my cell camera and it is set on 'negative/reverse' or something and I'm an ol'fart with bad eyes so have tuff time using it. Will have some pics up on our website soon, check there.
