How to figure out whether fresh water or salt water?
Hi!
Near my place, there is a river that goes into the ocean (the ocean is about 5 miles away from the place where I want to luanch the boats). Because of slow current, this river seems to be ok to run the RC boat, but also because of the big difference of high tide and low tide, I am not so sure whether the salt water comes upstream or not.
Isn't there any way to figure out whether the water contains salt or not (I don't want to run the boats in the salt water.).
Thank you very much for your attention!

Well first thing to look for is which direction is the current flowing. 5 miles from the ocean isnt much and I'm willing to bet that you may still be experiencing high N' low tides, which can affect the flow of water for a period of time. Where I live in south coastal Texas we still have some salt water up to 20 miles inland in our small streams and cannals that connect to the ocean. I guess it depends on some factors..
Well if in doubt, taste it, but dont swallow!

Thank you guys for your responses!
The name of the river is Nocomekl River in Surrey, British Columbia. But also near that river, there is another one that goes into the ocean. Its name is Serpentine River, Surrery, B.C., Canada.
If the salt rate is very mild, still is it possible to taste it?
Thanks again!

What's the big concern about running in salt water? The boaters in San Diego do it all the time. Just make sure you have a water tight radio box, spray the throttle barrel and linkage with WD40 after each run and wash the boat down when you have finished for the day.

If you want to figure out exactly how much salt there is, go to your local aquarium store. There are plastic swing arm hydrometers for about $10, also glass float hydrometers like you use for winemaking all the way to electronic meters.

Hi, guys!
Thank you very much for your responses!
I am glad to hear that Nicomekl River is fresh water. And yet, I will get a hydrometer, as Tombsy recommended.
Oh, by the wat, Dan S, how did you figure out that the river is fresh water?
Thank you again!

When running in Salt or Fresh Water you Should Use WD40 in the Fuel Tank, Carb, Water Jacket, to prevent corrosion and Mineral Build Up, Fresh Water Has Crap in it to. I live on the FL Gulf Coast and run In Both all the time and My Engine Still Look Like New inside and out. Nitro Fuel Absorbs Moisture and is Very Corrosive,, All Fuel Should be Flushed From All Systems After a day at the pond. The WD in WD40 Stand for Water Disperser so it keeps Moisture from collecting inside your engine and the Solvents in WD40 Clean Out and Neutralize the Nitro Fuel. Apply After Run Oil after Flushing with WD40.

Hi, guys!
Thank you for your response!
The pond at the Central Park in Burnaby is too small. Also nitro and gas boats are porhited there.
Amax, I have a question for you.
You said that you run your boats both in fresh and salt water. Then, if yor flip your boat over in salt water, and when the engine and the radio get salt water in them, what do you do?
Thank you again!

chances are you have a BRACKISH WATER it's a kinda high salinity than fresh water but not enough to be called seawater,,,i'll go for tasting test and the kind of fish and living creature that are present will tell exact the kind of water, but the bottom line i'll wash the boat and spray with wd40 before keeping it otherwise enjoy it
