Bad ass boat man, what scale is that? Looks like the same size as the gas powered version going around, not sure who builds it though. I am designing a 1/5 scale miss bud like yours with turboshaft engine like the turbine heli's have. That way I can have a prop just like the real ones do. I live up in boca and I would love to see that thing run! Let me know when you start running that beast.

I think i found the engine to fit this project

made by jetcat germany, not sure if its available through jetcat usa's website yet though.

it has a gearbox and the shaft comes out underneith the turbine perfect to connect a shaft for a prop and the rpm reduction is down to 16,000 rpm which is almost identicle to the real rpm speed, they are around 15000-15500 rpm.

Turbine powered boat is next on my list of projects. I just finished a 1/4 scale turbine car.

The hull is a 56" fountain from Performance International. I have not decided which turbine engine I will use but it will be one with a gear reduction box. I have seen thrust driven R/C turbine boats in action and in my opinion they are not worth the effort.

Yes it is the same as the gas 1/8 miss bud. I was looking for a 1/5 or 1/4 myself. I am not going to run it through a gearbox because of wieght. The extra wieght of the gearbox I think might be too much for the 1/8 boat, but 1/5 should be able to handle that duty well. Also do not go with a direct drive. You need a free floating turbine if you want to transfer power.

56",,,NIIICE! My next project will be a big one like that. There is a actuall turbine powered cat that races on the off shore curcuit. If I could get one big enough, maybe 2 turbines driving a shaft on a 1/5-1/4 off shore cat hull.

Why werent you impressed by the thrust drivin boats? What was thier defect? What kind of coarse were they running?

I've seen couple of videos posted online over the past year or so. Don't get me wrong thrust driven will push the hull. but the ones I've seen were not fast did not plane properly nor would they turn worth a damn. You still need a rudder, turn fin and possibly trim tabs, all of which create alot of drag and last but not least one of the largest contributing factors to speed & handling is the prop (diameter, pitch & shape), thrust driven gives you no adjustability or flexability in this regard.

I'm not trying to cause any waves nor discourage anyone from building a thrust driven boat, just my 2 cents. I don't mind being proven wrong either;)

To all of those interested in an Actual Marine Turbine Turboshaft: Go to WWW.MHZUSA.Com, They have a unit coming out in the summer and it is exactly what everyone is looking for to have the Genuine "Turbine Powered Boat" No price as of yet, But soon. Also, To the gentleman that has the 1/5 or 1/4 Scale Hydro, Who has that boat available? And is Performance International still aroung ?

your right the MHZ tuboshaft does appear to be the only marine application turbine in the works. I would suspect the cost to be around $5K if and when it does become available.

I just recieved an email from newton marine who speicalizes in 1/8 scale hydroplanes and they have a ton of plans.

One of their tech guys told me that he could blow up the plans to what ever scale you wanted and 1/5 or 1/4 scale would be easy to convert.
As for actual builders I would check out the namba website. They have about 10-15 different manufactures who build these boats from plans that a customer could send them. I think this would be the best bet since your droping an engine that is about 3500-4000 dollars into the hull. Better make sure its built by a pro.

As far as getting a hull, I would recommend building it yourself from Newton's plans. Just for the record, I'm building a 1/6th scale 2003 Oh Boy! Oberto from HEAVILY MODIFIED Newton plans. This thing is 61.75 inches long and about 29.5 inches wide with a 14.8 inch tunnel. A scaled out Budweiser turbine hull is approximately 59 inches long with a 29.5 inch width and 15 inch tunnel. If I remember right, the MHZ turbine and gearbox will drop right in and figures out to about 21,000 RPM prop speed with a power output comparable to a Zen 260. A boat that size is about as big as you could safely handle and launch while running. I wouldn't want to see a 1/5th or 1/4th scale boat(88.5" long by 43" wide with a 22.5" tunnel) in the hands of an inexperienced driver, it might be deadly[sm=eek.gif]
