Come on guys i need some help!! im still trying to sand my fiberglass.....how do i know when im done sanding or not?!?!? i have sanded my engine hastches and everything is smoth to the touch..BUTT i do see some low spots in the glass where it hasent been sanded....will the clear coat cover all of this up or do i have to sand untill everything is a foggy look??? anyone know about sanding wood boats with fiberglass PLEASE HELP

Depending on the hull type, and whether the hull is going to be painted, there is always "That's Good Enough" factor. I know a lot of builders that will say. "The hull is under water, no one will notice."

I however seem to chase these low spots with succesive coats of resin and sanding till I can get them to dissapear. I have typically just slopped an additional coat of resin on the hull. But I am learning that thinning the resin helps prevent too much build up overall. Also, that thinned resin will more readily flow into the low spots, and brush down over the rest of the hull. For hulls that will be painted there is a "finishing resin"(it is an opaque white) that will fill those low spots and is sandable to an almost showroom finish.

Thinning will depend on what type and brand of epoxy you are using.

If YOU are finished chasing the low spots, and have reached that "good enough" point, a light hand sanding of all the "shiney spots" and a final clear coat or two will give the hull a uniform finish.

you must not get R/C Boat Modeler. Tony Castronovo recently did an article on how to fill in the low spots.
