Dumas Creole Queen paddlewheel belt.

need advice on measuring and fastening ends of Dumas Creole Queen paddlewheel pulley belt. I'm using the Dumas motor, pulley and belt on a scratch built paddlewheeler. Dumas doesn't give any instructions on the belt.

Couldn't you use a large O ring instead of the belt?

RE: Dumas Creole Queen paddlewheel belt.

Thanks Tug Guy,
The O ring would have to span 5" between the motor and the paddlewheel shaft. Are O rings that large available? I'm not that familar with them, but Ill keep that in mind for the next boat.

This link says up to 21 1/2 inches for an OD. I haven't seen them that big in my local hardware store but i have seen then about 6 inches in OD.

There is also a small parts place check google for small parts they have toothed belts and pulleys. That is what I use on my scratch built paddlewheeler.
I am not familiar enough with what Dumas supplies for pulleys to run their paddlewheel whether the pulleys will run a O ring or not. Do you think it will?

Dumas supplies a V pulley and a 1/8" diameter round "rubber" belt, but it has to be measured and joined together. I have used timing belts but thought I would try their system. The timing belts that were available did not fit the scale I am building.

Stock drive products is the other company They carry round endless belts. The diameters may be too small for you I am not sure. The smallest shows to be 1/16 dia. and the largest that may fit your use is 3/16 dia. The 1/8 diameter looks ot fit your range of need.

Tug Guy 06-18-2006 05:48 PM

RE: Dumas Creole Queen paddlewheel belt.

Racing Redneck I sure do, now remember before you glance at these that this model is not completed yet. Some parts are not made yet and much of the model needs some tweaking. But it is a scratch built model based on the plans of the ZULU Indian river paddle wheeler.

Eddy runs the site I believe he is a listee of the yahoo tugs and tows group. His paddler is a huge monster of a model.

Suggestions for belt:
1. use a knotted string as a temporary belt to find the correct Dumas belt length; use several wraps if you need more friction with this temporary belt. Or use a rubber band, though length measurements would be harder with the stretchy rubber.
2. What is the belt made of?
3. You can CA the belt ends together,
or sew them (traditional way to join ends of a rubber or leather belt),
or use a staple, if the pulleys are large enough with a deep enough V to pass the staple.
4. I have some semi stretchy, round, plastic/rubbery thread that might work as a belt for a V pulley, try the sewing stores in your area.
5. install a spring tensioned idler pulley to take up slack in the belt, making precise measurement of length unnecessary.

Tom, if you look at all the windows in the walls you'll see small windows close together, like the front of the 2nd deck. My guess is that is where some doors are. Probably double doors. The layout of this Dumas model isn't like any of the pics I've seen of the real one(s). I also put some archways in places I thought logical. You can see one in this pic of mine that's not too far along(I'm more into nitro cars in the warm seasons).

Go to the US Post Office and get some different sizes of their rubber bands. Cut and tie together what you need. Pick colors that blend in. :D

Hell. I have some BIG rubber for use in large wind up Free Flight models. about 1/4"
Go to a hospital & get a piece of surgical tubing.

Use a piece of 1/2 A fuel tubing. Connect the ends with a small piece of copper wire STRAND.

Stuff is everywhere. :D

Guys,

Another option is to use vacuum cleaner belts. Experiment with differnet sizes until you find one just the right size. Wal-Mart sells them (probably others as well) and they are pretty cheap. Break one, have a spare and replace it.

O-ring I use

I can't post a link because I haven't been here long enough, so search Amazon for :

"165 Viton O-Ring, 90A Durometer"

I use these. My drive shaft and wheel shaft are 9.5" apart, center to center.
