Will a 4 channel 40mhz reciever work with a 2 channel 40mhz transmitter?

As the Doc said -- Yes. You just have to find the channels on the receiver that the transmitter is talking to. I'd gues at channels 1 and 2.

FYI I use a 7 channel reciever in my 2 channel sailing boat.

So if i get a two channel transmitter, all I have to do is use channel 1 and 2 on the four channel reciever?

I'm not too sure I'd guaranty channels 1 & 2, but it would be two of the four. Just swap until you find which two work.
