STEERING PROBLEM!
 

Can anyone help?

I have built a Dateline marine Cheroke Chief using my Irvine .20 with submerged drive to try and keep things cheap and simple LOL.

The thing is, it won't turn right!!!!!! Radio seems to be working fine but it leans into the turns and then seems to dig in and spins off in the opposite direction. Adding trim tabs to the outer edge of the tramsom hasn't helped.

The only thing I can think of is that the set up is wrong. The prop shaft angle is 10 degrees. The COG could be to far forward.

Any ideas?

Check your CG as it may be too far forward. It should be at about 27-30% forward of the transom.

Thank's Ron I thought that may be the case, CG looks to be nearer 50% at the moment.

You might also check for any 'twisting' of the rudder. Not the most likely cause, but it can be. How you'd go about checking for that is a complete mystery to me - lol.

Check for slackness in the rudder controls, or a bad servo with missing teeth. A right hand turning prop (rotates clockwise to go forward when viewed from behind the boat) will turn boat to left due to "paddlewheel effect." So, if you can turn left, but not right, it might be due to this action, showing that there is slop in the turn linkages somewhere.

Sorted it out at last, weight shifted back and a Possi turn rudder mounted to the transum instead of the conventional submerged one. The prop now looks to far forward but it works well.
