Building a Hull
 

Has anyone ever tried to build their own hull from scratch? I have been thinking about building one myself I want one small like less than a foot long and am going to put a nitro motor in it. I have some fiberglass mat and resin and was going to build it from that. Does anyone have any tips. It is just going to be for fun and those what if situations. I just want to see if I can do it but want it to be functional. Any help would be great

yes, people have bult their hulls from scratch before...but less than a foot running a nitro?!?!? most people have built theirs from wood and just fiberglassed over it to add strength and to waterproof it.

just some engine ideas, but i really think you should try an electric setup...a simple 05 motor and 6 cells, or maybe a brushless motor...i would suggest a vee....there are plans out there free plans out there for a vee hull somehwere...you could use those to give you an idea of how to build a hull....i would use balse framing and 1/64" birch ply to keep it light though....you might not even need to use forberglass, just a coat of resin...to save weight....

Thanks for the help I want to use a nitro though because I want it to be something comepletely insane. The nitro motor is a 28 makes 32000 rpm and 2.5 hp enough to do lots of stupid things.

Oh, I think that one foot hull will be plenty 'insane' enough for that motor. Sort of like dropping a blown hemi in a Cooper Mini! It can be done, but what are you gonna do with it after you do it? Probably adding a few inches to that hull would make it at least do-able without the literal meaning of 'insane'.

I don't think adding a couple of inches will even be enough. You might want to look at more in the 24" range with a width in the 10" range. Going much smaller than these will give you a boat that will have trouble staying on the water and rolling when you hit the throttle

build a wildthing or similar i built a 30" version of the gas mono everyone is now building and i scaled the plans down from 48" mine has a.61 in it so id say make youres 24"to 30" and you should be ok.if you want the plans ill send them its a plywood build and its coated in slow set epoxy no glass its not needed.all you need to do is use some cloth on the engine rails to make them strong.also the joints can be done in the same way.ive also built the full size version for a weedy motor which is a lot of fun,heres a pic of my big one.

Look for a race near you. Watch what a .21 size boat will do for speed, then come back and decide how big a .32 should be. You will have a good idea how insane just a .21 can be in a two-foot boat.

Yea I wouldnt mind seeing your plans if you could send them to me. That will give me some direction on how to do this. I may scale it down a little bit. :D But I doubt I am going to make it as small as I was saying that would be rediculous.
