K&B outboard flex cable question:
 

I have a K&B outboard that was converted to electric motor use. It just broke the flex cable. It is 4.75" overall length, and each end has a 0.5" crimp in the shape of a square.

Where would I find a replacement? I have been looking but so far only found raw cable that needs to be trimmed and crimped.

If that is the only way to replace it, is there a commercial crimper available the makes the square crimp?

Ron I have another question for you. Inside the outboard was a teflon stuffing tube. It was torn up pretty bad. Instead of using another teflon tube I made one from brass tube.

Now I am wondering if that will be a problem due to increased heat of friction on the cable. It is well greased, but you know........

Yeah, I know.
Jeery Dunlap did an article years ago on replacing the Teflon tubing with either brass or aluminum tubing so I don't see any problem. Most of the racers are tossing out the Teflon anyway nowadays.
Back when I was racing OB tunnels I would shorten the Teflon tubing and put a pressure fitting as high up on the lower unit that I could and pumped the lube in there.

Thanks Ron. You just reaffirmed what I was thinking.

Well, here's my story. After replacing the flex cable I ran the motor on my bench for, oh, maybe a minute. Got fairly warm down in the lower end and the prop nut temped at 130°F. That's when I made the post.

I just got back from running the motor in my swimming pool now that it is reattached to the boat. I can't run the boat in the pool, so I pushed down on the bow to lighten the stern and then let 'er rip. Sprayed water all over the place for about 3 or 4 minutes. :D

Immediately after shutting off I grabbed the lower end and it was stone cold. So I think I am good to go.
