question about fluxuating electronics on r/c gas boat
 

Hello, My name is Rich & this is my first post here. I got into Nitro R/C cars a little under a year ago & have aquired a few of them. two TC3's, T-MAXX & nitro stadium truck. My friends gave a me a boat wich leads to this post.

It's a Prather fun cruiser 46" 2 stroke gas boat. When the engine is NOT running the electronics work & operate fine (throttle & rudder) When the engine IS running both servos go haywire & fluxuate all over causing the rudder & throttle to act crazy. This stops as soon as I kill the engine. I am guessing that the magneeto is causing interferance ( not sure but seems to make sence) It has a Futaba AM transmitter & Futaba reciever. My friend told me that the boat never did this when he used it however it's been in storage for 10 years. Does my guess at what's causing this seem correct to you or am I missing something? If I am correct them will a 2.4 ghz radio & reciverfix this?

update, I have researched the plug that's in it. it's a champion dj7y & it's a NON resistor. I have read online that a resistor plug may solve my problem. I don't know what resistor plug will interchange though, anyone know this one?

This sounds like interference generated by the HT system that supplies the spark.  If you find an equivalent resistor plug (thats a plug with a resistor built in) it will work fine.  Alternatively, fit a resistor plug lead, much like the ones in your car.  Remember when AM car radios used to pop and splutter every time another car went by?  When resistive HT leads became normal, that problem went away.<div>Fitting a 2.4GHz set MIGHT work, but I see you losing all your friends still using 27MHz AM unless you suppress you HT system.</div>

AM radios and gas engines aren't a good mix. Even a cheap FM radio system will be a big improvement. Throw the plug away and get a resisitor plug. Next, check for any metal-to-metal rubbing for added insurance as that can cause radio interference also. Part of the includes keeping the drive cable well greased.

I gotta agree with Ron,, Toss the AM Radio, I prefer the 2.4GHz stuff myself but an FM would be better than the AM anyway. Make Sure Everything is good and tight to limit vibration, Make sure the pick ups on the pic up coil are not rusty from sitting so long, Clean any Whiskers off the Magnets of the Magneto also.

if the NGK CMR7H fits your engine that would be my first and only choice.
NO champion in a RC boat, they do not like water.
ceramic will break and will damage the engine.

The Prather Fun Cruiser came stock with a Homie so he'll probably need spark plugs for that. I don't know what the NGK plug number is for those but the 7H won't fit if I'm right.

You can try a NGK BPMR6A-10.
That is the plug that I ran in my Homelite,
you should be able to find at any motorcycle
shop.

Hey guys, Thanks for the tips &amp; advice.

I got it figured out. First I picked up a resistor plug from Napa auto parts. Same as the origonal plug except an (R) in front of the number. Champion Napa part #748. That didn't solve it. I still had interferrence. Next I ran by Radio Shack &amp; tried putting a FR choke on the servo wire leads, once again, didn't fix it. So I then decided to route the antenna wire from inside of the boat to outside through a regular RC car type tube &amp; it totally fixed it!!! I was very happy at this point &amp; was able to get it on the water for the first time since I had it.It was a lot of fun.

Once again thanks for the great advice. I will get some pics up of this old boat as soon as I can.

Water , electronics & time = bad servo, receiver and transmitter. Had my stuff setting for several years. Ended up with a new FM system & servos . Also new batteries. Sorry turborich You'll end up with more gray hair. like mine

Yeah, I'm sure that your right. :D I stopped by the hobby store on the way home from work today &amp; picked up a few parts I needed. I saw that they had (new old stock) Futaba servos for $10 bucks. He told me that if I bought all 5 of them I could have them for $5 bucks a piece. I thought it was a great deal! I put 2 of them in the boat &amp; they are very smooth. I plan on taking it back to the water this weekend &amp; running it again.

Hey guys, I took a few pics of the old boat. I was going to take all of the decals off &amp; re-paint the boat but the old boat guys who race here localy told me not to touch it as it's a 20 year old classic. What do you guys think about this?

Keep the look as long as you can.  If you can find someone who can do replacement decals, then should a refurb be NEEDED rather than wanted, great, but original will be better.
