Can I use a different carb? MGT 8.0

Hi everyone,

I was very fortunate to come into a huge lot of RC cars/trucks and boats. One of them is an MGT 8.0 and it appears to be unused. The only issue is that the carb on the .50 engine is gone. The engine itself appears to be brand new. This engine uses a 13mm carb where it plugs into the engine. I think "spigot" or something like that is the correct term. lol.

I did find a no name carb with remote needle valve that is also 13mm. Could I use this?

I went through every carb I have whether it was installed on an engine or not and they are all 14-15 mm except for the one carb mentioned above.

Any help would be appreciated!

Mike

Or any suggestions on a comparable engine that I can replace the .50 with?

the 8.0 was a semi-reworked helicopter engine, i really dont know too much about the .50 you could try the no-name on there, if you cant tune it rich enough to be within temp i would stop right away. the .50 is a torque beast, but it is a fuel hog, and ive heard both very different sides of the fence on its lifespan. dynamite makes a .28, i was told to stay away from the combo, roto/pull starts as they were weak, there is a nova-rossi 28-8 i hear is really good, off https://shop.thundertiger.com/collec...mer-collection there are some good deals as well.
hope that helps! love these MGT's

Edit: doubled checked TT site, looks like they only have the .21 left in stock. good engine, but your car would need to be re-geared.
also lots of people like the LRP28 and LRP30 engines, i have no experience with them.

Thank you for the reply!

If anyone has installed different engines in their MGT 8.0 I would love to know what you used and how plug n play it was or what had to be done to get a good fit.

Thank you for the info! I actually have a few 4.6 engines. I am looking for a carb for the 8.0 .50 engine in the MGT 8.0. Or a good replacement engine that will have as much or close to as much power as the 8.0 does.

Thanks again!

The 8.0 was a reworked airplane engine made by Thunder Tiger. It was a powerful engine just because it was so big. The reality is a good .28 like the Nova 28-8 will outperform the TT 8.0 engine in most respects simply because it’s setup much better for truck duty. The TT 8.0 engine doesn’t make more than 2hp (basically it’s topped out around 16,000-20,000rpm) where the 28-8 realistically makes about 3hp (should pull 30,000rpm easily) stock and has heaps more top end.

In this case, bigger isn’t always better. More of a “bling” thing than anything practical.

Mgt 8.0

Hey how's it going, just wondering what you ended up doing with your mgt

If anyone has installed different engines in their MGT 8.0 I would love to know what you used and how plug n play it was or what had to be done to get a good fit.
