Default Fuel recommendation

I just ordered a Tamiya Nitrage 5.2 with a .32 engine. Could I please get some recommendations on the best fuel to use from you experienced racers. I have flown planes for years but I know the mixture is different for cars. Nitro/Oil percentage etc. And can I get any deals on line or is going to my local hobby shop always the best bet for lower fuel prices. I have heard 20 to 30% nitro and 8 to 12% castor oil. Even if that is right where can I get the best deals. Thanks and Merry Christmas

i am not a racer , but i can tell you that percentages very from fuel to fuel .
i can also tell you that byrons gen2 and odonnell are by far the most desired on this and several other forums .
the percentage is kinda up to you i personally stay with 20-25%( nitro) range , i also run mostly small blocks too though .
i have read that a lot of poeple run 30% (nitro) in thier big blocks , if you engine doesnt seem to be running just right
you may have to add or remove a shim from your head . i would suggest that you buy your fuel in quarts so that you
can try a few different kinds and see what works best for you before you buy gallons ( cheaper)

I use O'Donnell Racing fuel. It's good and it's what my LHS sells a bunch of so it's convenient. Fuel is one of the things I buy from local places as opposed to online.

I like Blue Thunder Sport and Sidewinder Race (both 20%). Nothing much else available locally, or I'd of tried Byron's or O'Donnels as I've always heard good things.

I will say, do NOT use Sidewinder Backyard Basher. I think it's because the oil content is so high, but my engines always ran too hot and were touchy to tune with that stuff.

I use Byrons Gen 2 30% w/ 9% castor exclusively because that's what I can get locally.

Sidewiner 30% previously, but I see better performance from my stock OS 21's and modded JPX 21 from Byrons.

Good luck.

No, the oil takes up space in the combustion chamber which sort of artificially increases the compression ratio, plus you will have less fuel, so you tend to lean it to try to get decent power. Or that's my opinion anyway. Regardless, here's a link that talks about it (although it's been pointed out there are mistakes in the article):

I run O'donells 30% Have better luck with that then the Trinity 30% i used to run. I loved it back when they had it and was to stubbern to try anything else.... man was i missing out, my engines hold a tune, and idle better now.
