Default Crystals

Hi I have not dealt with RC cars much at all. I had a car when I was a kid that I just found and it never did work right. It would just wig out and do what it wanted. I bought a new battery for it and found that the on/off switch on the car was no good, I installed a new switch and the car to move, but it still does what ever it wants to do if the antenna gets more the 5 to 8 feet away. I have checked the antenna wires in the controller and car and they are OK. I was reading about something called "Crystals" that allow several people to run the same type of cars at the same time. I guess they look like little silver 1/2" square metal things with 2 pins on them. I took apart my car and controller and they each have one. The 1 in my car reads 26.690 and the 1 in my controller reads 27.145. Don't these need to have the same reading on them? This is my problem, right? Where can I get some of these "Crystals"?
Thanks for any info.

Yes, you need a new set of crystals. You most likely have an AM radio, on 27MhZ.....the crystal set is going to be around $15 for the set. I am a little suprised that you had any radio contact with the vehicle, even in that short of range, on the different frequencies....however they are close together.

Are you sure the one in your car is 26.690? The one in your controller (27.145) is channel 4. Below are the "US" Channels for the 27MHz band. One crystal should also have a T or Tx (transmitter) and the other a R or Rx (receiver) on it.

Channel 1, Frequency 26.995, Color Code Brown.
2, 27.045, Red
3, 27.095, Orange
4, 27.145, Yellow
5, 27.195, Green
6, 27.255, Blue

You should also make sure that the frequencies match and not just the channel number or color code--I've seen a few unmatched colors and some other crystals, such as "06" which is actually a "3" (0# is actual #/2) instead of a 6 (6/2=3).

yes the one from the car reads 26.690 and below that says sunny, the one from the controller reads 27.145 and below that says sunny. There is no T or R on either of them.

I did find a 26.690 on a couple of frequency charts, which shows it as Channel 32 and a New Zealand frequency.

Either way, you need a pair of matching crystals. Any good local hobby shop that caters to R/C should have a set.

The prices for crystal sets seems to be coming down. I have seen 27Mhz AM Crystal Sets going for $7-8. Team Losi even lists a retail price of $6 for additional crystal sets for their Mini-T. I think this helped drive down the prices from other manufactures. I have not tried it, but I would assume that the crystal sets Losi has for the Mini-T would fit in other radio set as well. Can anyone confirm this?

I've used Futaba, Kyosho, Losi, Traxxas, I believe Duratraxx and some other type of AM crystals with my Futaba T3PK AM Conversion module. All seemed to work fine.

Default RE: Crystals not the problem

I bought new crystals and installed them but it did not help my problem. Any one else have any more suggestions. This car I bought in 1988 is a MRC Road Winner. Tigger N. Bennie is right I think as far as the controler and car are on Channel 4. there is a small sticker on the back of my controller that says the controller has 27.145 and the car has 26.690. These #'s are over a 4 that is bigger. I really have no idea where to go now have never dealt with RC stuff at all.
Please help!
Thanks Kevin

if you have a track near you, maybe you could take the car down to it and see if there is a nice guy that would look at it for you..or you could take it too the hobby shop..

GI, Did you install both crystals in the proper place? There should be one marked to be installed the transmitter and the other one marked to be installed in the receiver in your car. Both crystals should state the frequency and / or channel number and be the same. What frequency did you get? Just wondering if by chance you purchase an AM band (27 MHz range) or an FM bands. For the equipment you have you would need to stay with one of the AM frequencies.

Default RE: Crystals - what's approved for 27 MHz?

Raz, I check into those crystal sets from Radio Shack, but I could only fine one set with channels 7-12 (catalog # 60-8507). Do you have a stock number for the set with channels 1-6?

Also this brings up another question. I thought that the only FCC approved radio frequencies for RC cars in the 27 MHz range was for channels 1-6. So how is it that Radio Shack can offer additional channels?

the controller says 27.045 but i was thinkin a diff freq other than 27. cause every dam r/c car in this house is a 27 and id like to run 2-3 cars all at once.. so would a 75 one work? or am i stuck with just 27's?

27.045 i think is channel 2 on the 27 mhz am band but not sure on that you are stuck with 27 mhz but dont let that get you down cause there are 12 channels for the 27 mhz AM band visit your local radio chack and ask them for a crystal set for their xmod cars there is 2 differet packs 1-6 and 7-12 both are around $15 each

most tracks / racers only worry about the easy # on the crystals 27 mhs goes 1-6 on am and fm 7-12 on am not sure about the fm band if it has 7-12 and 75 mhz goes from 61-89 i have 62,63,65,and 70 for my cars when i am at the races so if there is a frequency conflict i can change freqs. and still practice/race

so i could get
26.995
27.195
27.095
27.145
27.255

and all those will differ from the 27.045

what freq will make me able to run with all the other 27fq cars
