Default Keep your air filter clean and oiled......some intresting facts.

I was curious as to how much air is actually be sucked through your air filter and what kind of load it is actually under, as I always thought it to be a little extreme to clean it after everyday. Well now I realise how important it actually is, here are some numbers for you to think about.....
I will be using my Ofna Force .32 engine for all examples:
So lets say that of my .32 sized engine each stroke I am getting about .28 cubic inches of air in it, On average I would guess I am doing about 3/4 throttle ( I run it hard ) so that would be about 28500 RPM's. To calculate how much air it consumes every minute you would go .28(cubic inches of air) and multiply it by 28500 (rpm's) to get an answer of 7980 cubic inches of air. I am Canadian so I am going to have to convert this to litres, sorry. So that's 131 cubic litres a minute times 60 to get litres/hour and you get 78600, I will usually get about 4 hours in of driving a day so that means during the day about 301000 litres of air. That's a little over 2 times of what an adult male breathes in a period of 24 hours! So it consumes air 3 times as fast as us when we are semi relaxed. Now go for a run, do some sprints, come back and try breathing through a dirty air filter, I bet you will pass out from insufficient oxygen. In the lifetime of my engine, enough air will have gone through the air filter to fill several swimming pools! Now go clean your darn filters!

A couple corrections, One of my sources was off, After 4 hours of driving it consumes as much air as 20 people do over the course of an entire day!
That's a few swimming pools of air every 4 hours, a little under 75 Olympic pools in its lifetime (knock on wood)

same priciple as a car. those engines SUCK air, especially with a turbo.

i clean mine once a day too, i only use engine or light bearing oil to oil them, i also have a can of K&N that i use, just a spert and its all good. (bet its cheaper than nitro air filter oil.)

Yeah thats what I do. Thoroughly clean it with soap and water, dry it completely, oil, and go.

I fill up a container with hot water and dish soap, let it soak for a good five mins, then I squeeze the water out and put it back in the water again, repeat until water is coming out clean. Now the tricky part is getting a nice oil job, what I usually do is take a small sandwich size zip-lock bag and put a couple teaspoons of air-filter oil in it then close the bag and move it around so the oil is evenly covering all sides of the bag, then I put the air-filter foam in and slide it around while squeezing until it is evenly covered, you have to rotate it too which is a little tricky.

I never cleaned mine, ever, ran fine. .28ci of air is really small to consume at one time. The air filters can inlet much more air than that at one time. So, not a big deal really.

True, .28 ci is a small amount of air, but at some odd 28000 rpms its like a constant suck because the engine has such a short time in between each stroke.

Correction, I made a mistake, driving my ofna for 4 hours will pull as much air through the air filter as a group of 20 people breathe in a day! Now that is crazy!

I clean mine after every use, cheap insurance for a very expensive part (piston and sleeve). I also use an prefilter over the regular filter and I take spares in case it is really dusty. Have you ever noticed how much crud comes out of your filter when you wash it with warm water and detergent? And that's only the big stuff, the microscopic particles you can't even see. I have a OS .21 V-spec with over 4 gallons thru it and it still has tons of compression. I also have a OS .28XZ in my truggy with about 2 gallons thru it and the insides still look brand new.
