Maybe rephrase the question... Are you saying that you want to recharge a portable 12v recharger with the ICE? Or do you want to use an old charger as a 12v power supply?

When using a good charger use a good power supply. There really isn't an excuse not to have the right equipment considering how much we put into our cars and batteries. The first thing I did when I got into this hobby was buy a few really serious lab power supplies and chargers along with protection circuitry for the workshop.

For a quick, cheap, and very reliable solution, I picked up an old computer power supply and converted it to 12v power supply. It puts out 17A continuous @ 12v and just cost me about $20 (parts from Radio Shack required to make the conversion). I've been using it for three years and it still works great. You can find how-to's online for the conversion.
