I did a query on google, but nothing came up. I figured if anyone knew, it would be one of you hard-core fellas!
You know, I think that scene was the first real instance where I started to get interested in the R/C sport. I saw that movie when I was real little, and can still remember my amazement at watching those cars. I was like 4-5 at the time... then my brother got a Tamiya Hornet, and the rest is history.

I have friends that raced in the early 70's and they used NiCads......they had nowhere near the capacity of what we have now though.....SC-1200s....

To use Tamiya as an example.
Their on-road cars from the mid to late 70s used battery trays for individual cells (not sub-c either). One example is the Tamiya Porsche 934 Turbo circa 1976.

Note: the battery holder is for 4 cells on a 6 volt vehicle (designed for 1.5 volt alkaline)
That is the style of car (chassis, not the body) used in the movie. I am not stating they used a tamiya chassis, but it is of this style of design.

"Jammin" Jay Halsey drove the Dead Pool car in what is arguably the best RC scene ever:
http://aedownloads.com/pdf/deadpool.pics.pdf
Car chase
"Callahan is pursued through San Francisco's hilly streets in his unmarked Oldsmobile 98 squad car by a remote controlled bomb assembled by Rook, disguised as a radio controlled car. The "bomb" was in fact a highly modified Associated RC10 competition buggy topped with an off-the-shelf 1963 Chevrolet Corvette body from hobby accessory manufacturer Parma International. It was driven by world-champion radio control driver "Jammin'" Jay Halsey and was electrically powered. The sound effects of the "engine" were added in post production. This chase scene has many similarities to, and in fact may be considered a parody of the famous chase scene in the Steve McQueen movie Bullitt. Eastwood has said that the chase was his favorite part of the film."
"A modified 1/10 scale 2wd Associated RC10 off road racer with an off-the-shelf Parma International 1963 Chevrolet Corvette body was used in the famous chase scene in which "Dirty Harry" Callahan is being pursued through the streets of San Francisco, California by a highly explosive bomb disguised as an R/C car. The "bomb" was driven by world-champion race driver Jay Halsey. The car was in fact was sold with an electric motor being a competition model, which for cars in that scale was at that time only sold and permitted to enter competitions with electric motors; the internal combustion engine soundtrack were added in post-production."

Great scene, though. It's been years since I've seen that.

LOL at 1:53- there just happened to be a ramp propped up against that box of produce... and what would have happened if the car had ended up on it's back? (antagonist shouts to pedestrians) "Um, hey! Excuse me! Yeah, could you do me a favor and flip that car right-side up? I'm trying to blow up this car I'm chasing... Thanks!" [sm=shades_smile.gif]

An electric car with nitro soundover... why didn't they just use a nitro car? [sm=confused.gif]

Does anyone remember the opening scene in Poltergeist, where the guy riding the bike while holding a 12-pack gets harassed by some neighborhood kids with remote-control cars? They're pacing him for a while as he's going down the street, then cause him to crash by darting in front of his front wheel. Just curious as to what these cars where, circa 1982, when the movie was made.
