You can't make it yourself, but what some people do is use Simple Green and WD40. I spray simple green on the car then put WD40 in metal areas, bearings, etc. For example, I would use nitro cleaner to clean grease out of my bearings. I wouldnt dare use Simple Green for that.

Hobby shops sell a nitro cleaner that's around $7-$8 / can. You can buy what is basically the same stuff at an auto parts store. Just buy Non-chlorinated Brake cleaner. That usually runs $3 - $4 / can.
Denatured alcohol can be bought at any good hardware store of home supply center like Ace, Lowes or Home Depot.
An old tooth brush and a small paint brush ar good for scrubbing and reaching small areas. Simple Green, Purple Power or any similar degreaser work well and can usually be mixed with the alcohol for added grease cutting power. But the best thing you can get for cleaning is a small air compressor. Use that in conjuction with cleaning chemicals and you'll end up with a very clean truck.

Do be careful with things like brake cleaner around nitro fuel. Nitromethane is reactive to strong bases (aka some of the stuff in the cleaners) so just a headsup. I use denatured alcohol and its amazing, spray it on, wipe it off, clean car. A favorite mix is
equal parts simple green and denatured alcohol + and a small amount of WD-40 to create a nice surface that muck wont stick to [8D]

I usually just use WD-40 and a paper towel and it does a nice job. I've found that Nitro Blast (Trinity) seems to have a very good cleaner and that really doesn't require you to do anything other than spray it on, but I rarely buy it because it's around $7 a can and WD40 is about half the cost and a bottle of wd40 always lasts longer for me.

nitro cleaner is basically brake cleaner. we buy them in boxes, about $2.5 each bottle compared to $9.99 nitro cleaner.
