Question for first truck

I want a truck that I can use in my backyard. This is my first truck so I want something good for a beginner. I already have a 8.4V nimh battery and charger that would work. Not including batteries my budget is $150. I want to go in grass and on pavement both decently fast. I know you are going to say save up for a nicer truck but I want to buy a cheap one because I love building and upgrading stuff so if I get a cheap one I will have more money for upgrades. I would like a 1/10 scale but a 1/16 or 1/18 scale would be fine. My LHS is about an hour away so I will be doing almost all shopping online. These are the ones I have found so far are they any good? Are there any others you recommend.

Exceed-RC Mustang http://www.nitrorcx.com/ex1scoffroym.html
Some of these come with batteries which is fine. Extras cant hurt. Thank you for your help.

RE: Question for first truck

save and buy a nicer truck, the $50 between your budget and a $200 RC buys a hell of a lot more quality and replacement parts availability

$200 buys a name brand RC with good parts support, $150 buys you.... well...$150 down the toilet

RE: Question for first truck

Then what $200 car would you suggest.

sloppyG 03-25-2011 08:17 AM

RE: Question for first truck

AE b4,t4, SC10
traxxas rustler,bandit,stampede (not recommended)

RE: Question for first truck

could get a tamiya kit if you love building

Tamiya DF-02 4wd (its a buggy, but I drive mine in grass fine) $119, needs a controller. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXTDR5&P=7 you can run 1/10th Stadium truck tires on it too if you get a 17t pinion
There is cheap mods make it pretty damn reliable, and fix its major weak point. Only other things is it needs shocks, and can use a aluminum front shock tower.

Tamia also has a few other relatively low priced kits available

The associated's are good suggestions, but his original budget was $150, now he's bumped it up to about $200. Those associated vehicles with electronics are going to be about $250.

EGJr: ifyou just can't go over $200 then get this: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...JH9**&P=MLIt comes with a battery and charger, most hobby shops will carry parts for it, and it's a decent beginner vehicle.

he's already got a battery and charger, what other "electronics" do you need with an RTR from associated?

My point is the RTR's are about $250, not in the range he's wanting to spend. I was refering to the kits, which would actually be in his price rangeof $200, but don't have motor/ESC/radio.

You mentioned $200 would get a good car, thenhe asked what would be a good car for$200. You replied by listing several $250associated vehicles

I like this one the best http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...JH9**&P=ML but are the ones I originally posted any good because I would rather not go over $150 unless I have to.

RE: Question for first truck

Good stuff in the 200+ range its really worth it!!
You could also look Used. The 200+ range used is even better.

RE: Question for first truck

Just in general is Redcat a good budget brand?

Evil Genius jr. 03-25-2011 09:27 AM

RE: Question for first truck

Also what makes a $250 dollar car better than a $150 dollar car?

Evil Genius jr. 03-25-2011 09:39 AM

RE: Question for first truck

Just to clarify It does not have to be a truck it just has to be offroad.

RE: Question for first truck

As for Red cats, Yes and No.
Yes because they make allot of trucks/cars in that range (200+). Prob more around 250 300, but yea.
No because there low end stuff will break easy, so don't expect to bash, or race with the rest of them. You simply won't...

RE: Question for first truck

Also there controllers are just bad...

you may want to price check things next time you're shopping because all those options I listed are $200, if your local shop is charging $250 you may want to start shopping somewhere else

$200 is plenty for an RTR AE vehicle

here's a brushless RTR for $225
http://www.ultimatehobbies.com/store/ASC9039!1007/RC10B4+RTR+2.4GHZ+BRUSHLESS
the brushed version is only $190
http://www.ultimatehobbies.com/store/ASC9038!1007/9038+RC10B4.1+RTR+2.4GHZ+RADIO%2C+BRUSHED+MOTOR
kyosho 4wd buggy for $200
http://www.ultimatehobbies.com/store/KYO30861T2B!1012/KYOSHO+30861T2-B+LAZER+ZX-5+READYSET+YEL%2FBLUE

blitz for $180
http://www.ultimatehobbies.com/store/HPI103171!1007/BLITZ+2WD+SHORT+COURSE+TRUCK+W%2FMAXXIS+BODY

there's a ton of similar options for similar prices

the extra money for these hobby grade vehicles means when you break them you're able to buy spare parts easily from lots of places... you will break them, it's not if you break them, it's when..

RE: Question for first truck

The exceed RC are only $100 and the have replacement parts and Aluminum upgrades. Are they and good.

RE: Question for first truck

Evil - Of the models you listed I would only recommend one of them and that is the Evader. This is not the best RC out there but it is the best of the ones you listed.

If you can save up and additional $50 or so I would recommend one of the Traxxas 2WD trucks like the Stampede, Rustler or Slash.

OK, I will see what I can find. I will post if I buy one.

no they're not good, the replacement parts are not available from nearly as many places

you can't get exceed parts at amainhobbies or towerhobbies, seems like you can only get them on ebay... so your supply is liable to dry up at any time

if you buy a good RC, it'll work well as is, and you don't have to buy upgrades...

also, you should know that most "upgrades" are purely garbage and make your RC more shiny, and less good.
