First Kit Car

Hi i have been driving rc cars for a few years, currently i am driving a KeN block Gymkhana fiesta vxl 1/16 from traxxas.
i am getting kind of bored of it,and am looking for a third R/C car, and i want it to be a kit car.
i have no clue what to get and wondering what you guys would suggest?

Thanks

RE: First Kit Car

depends what do you want buggy, truggy, MT, ST, or on-road(wouldn't bother as you have the Gymkhana fiesta )
then it again depends on scale, and cash on hand

RE: First Kit Car

curiuos that you say that i was actually looking more on the on road side because i enjoy it most, cash is not really and issue i would set my limit at $350-$400.
as for scale i was thinking about 1/10

assuming that's for everything, your choices are a bit limited. where would you be running it? most of them on the market these days seem to be exposed belt drive which dont like much of anything touching them. there is the tamiya xv01 which is one of the few purpose built rally cars on the market. then there is the associated tc4 club racer which is actually a pre-built chassis without wheels, tires, body (i think) and electronics. cant think of many other options that can be built for your budget but then again i'm not well versed in onroad cars. if you plan to race and you can double the budget, you'd be wise to check serpent, xray, crc and schumacher. looking into it, i found the schumacher mi1 for $165 US at amain http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ouring-Car-Kit

RE: First Kit Car

Regardless of what style you decide on, I'd recommend a Tamiya or HPI kit. They both have awesome instructions and overall they're more of a pleasure to build than a lot of other brands.

Lost a huge post I typed as bloody usual. Grrr....

Basically I was saying off road is more versatile. You can run an off road up and down the street, AND across a field. If you, like me, prefer on road for its realistic look, check this realistic looking off road car out...

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...-4WD-Buggy-Kit

It's a good price for the kit.

i have tried off road cars but i find i do not enjoy them as much

Foxy 04-02-2013 08:17 AM

RE: First Kit Car

Fair enough. What kind of use will it see? Up and down the street? Parking lots? Racetrack?

RE: First Kit Car

In any case, I've got three cars to recommend to you aimed at three different budgets...there are many other cars on the market, these would be my personal choices at their pricepoints.

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCFLH&P=0]The Team Associated TC4 Club Racer kit. [/link] - It's great because it's a kit, it has all the necessary adjustments a touring car should have, its cheap, no money is wasted on giving you a body or tires you may not want, there are loads of upgrades available, parts are easy to source, and because its shaft driven 4wd, you can drive it anywhere within reason.

Then there's the [link=http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=XRA300103]Xray T3R[/link]. Xray is arguably the premium quality brand in RC. I've owned many of their cars, both on and off road, racing and bashing, and every one was an absolute joy to build and run. PArts quality, materials, fit and finish, all second to none. This car is based on the world champion platform, and last years flagship for Xray, the T3, only with more down to earth materials, to give a more down to earth price. You could win club events with this car if you have the ability, and its a decent price for an amazing kit-building experience. The only downside is that like all premium touring cars, it is belt driven, which means you need to find pretty clean surfaces to run it. Little stones make short work of the unprotected belts.

If you have the cash and want the best, then this is Xray's latest brand new offering, the replacement for the T3. I will be getting one of these myself if and when I decide to revive my racing career. :) [link=http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_348_2588/products_id/240656/n/XRAY-T4-2013-EU-Rubber-Spec-Competition-1-10-Electric-Touring-Car-Kit]The Xray T4.[/link]

All of these cars could be built by the careful and methodical first time builder without any problems at all. Xray in particular make fantastic manuals and even include additional tips regarding setting up the car, etc during the build process.

RE: First Kit Car

only thing im thinking, if u are getting bored with the 1/16 brushless Ken Block, how would another onroad car be not as boring????

the only difference is.... welll not a whole much. only real advantage u will gain is a slightly longer chasssis. (the Ken Block uses 1/10 wheels and has the width of a 1/10)

if u plan on just running up and down roads with some carpark use, dont worry about getting anything fancy, it really only needs to go straight.

Have u thought about a drag car?

FYI im yet to find a 1/10 onroad car that handles as well as a offroader on a average road. The grade variance of *****umen roads really messes with 1/10 touring cars handling.

say the road u bash on has a variance of only 5mm. that would be like driving ur real car on a road with 50mm variance!!! (ungraded dirt track)

The listing at the link I posted for the TC4 details everything else that's required.

To expand on that for you, you will still need:

*A body of your choice (190mm electric touring car)
Wheels and tires of your choice (rubber for parking lots and the street, foam for the track)
*A motor and ESC (electronic speed control) combo. You should probably go for a motor between 6000 and 8000kv, and a 60A capable speed control. If you bought a lower kv motor, say 3000-4000, you could probably get away with a 40A speed control. ESCs for on-road touring cars should be SENSORED. If you need recommendations in this area, just let me know.
*A radio set if you don't already have one. This needs to comprise:
** A Transmitter that has at minimum the settings; EPA (End Point Adjustment), trim and channel reverse. This radio is excellent for very cheap... http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-gt3b-carradio-lcd.html
** A reciever compatible with the transmitter (included with the radio above)
** A servo for steering (here is a good and economical choice... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXUZ87&P=ML)
* A 2S lipo battery (there are many good and cheap ones at the site I linked for the radio above, you should use at least 4000mAh and at least 25C rated batteries.
* A charger for lipo technology - again this is available at the shop I linked above for very cheap. The Thunder AC6 is a very economical wall charger that can charge your batteries in less than 45 minutes.

That's it. Anticipating your next questions...how fast? This car on a 2S lipo geared appropriately will easily achieve 50mph on the street, geared more aggressively it could get to 60. How long? Runtimes with a 5000mAh 25C battery would be around 35 to 40 minutes depending on throttle use. Does it matter if I get a non-sensored motor and esc combo? No, but sensored is better for on-road giveing more smooth throttle response. What body and wheels/tires should I get? Both are standardised for touring cars, don't worry. Any wheels/tires will do, the only tihng to watch out for with the body is that you don't buy a 200mm one for nitro cars, which will look wide on the TC4. Make sure you get a 190mm version.

Hope all that helps. If I do a little napkin math in my head, I reckon you are looking at about $400 for all that, from cheap sources, but don't forget that $100 of that is in the batteries (if you get 2) and charger, which you only buy once and can be used for all your RCs. This is a VERY economical RC to build and run once you get over the initial shock of setting up for electric.

RE: First Kit Car

how many turns do you suggest?
/ what do they mean

Foxy 04-04-2013 12:10 AM

RE: First Kit Car

Turns is an indirect indication of kv (how many rpm a motor will turn for each volt supplied). It actually refers to the number of times the stator is wound. Less turns=higher kv=faster and more power use. For a mix of rally and asphalt, I would suggest not going over 5000kv. If only asphalt, then you can go higher. Very high kv is only for short, very fast runs, they get hot fast.

RE: First Kit Car

I cant arguee with Foxy about the TC4, I had no idea they were that cheap

but if u can squeeze the budget more.... bigger is better ;)

this thing will out preform any 1/10 touring car on and offroad... on a well prepared track... who knows, maby
only down side is the electronics are about 30% more expensive.... but saying that it could be turned into a 100mph missile

RE: First Kit Car

This is a very reasonably priced little combo for general use.

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...000KV_80A.html

OR if you'd prefer something from the CONUS...

http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-35a-9t-3650-motor.html

If you only want a motor, do you need sensored or sensorless?

EXT2Rob 04-28-2013 08:41 AM

RE: First Kit Car

Molyneux, I have that EZrun combo Foxy linked.  It's a great little system. Runs cool, geared properly. And the motor bearings are replaceable.  BUT....I DON'T recommend your choice of battery.  Nothing against Venom, but that 25C battery will get a little too warm with that motor combo.  Heat in a battery will shorten its life.  For the price of that $40 Venom pack, you could get a Gens Ace 40-50C pack from HobbyPartz that WILL NOT get hot, and therefore, last  a long time, AND give you better performance, since the voltage won't sag as much as a 25C under load.  Trust me on this.
