Looking for a good entry car
 

Hey everyone!

Im one of those annoying new guys who is here to get some advice.

I have been interested in getting myself my first "real" rc car but as a noob im not sure what to aim for.

I am mainly interested in a 4wd Monster truck or possibly a truggy. It will probably mainly be used on grass and gravel. I may also drive it at the local sandpit. I will just drive it for fun, not on specific tracks, i also wont race it. Some jumping? Sure! I also want it to be a waterproof electric to minimize maintenence. Brushless seems nice. Relatively quick is a requirement as well

Price range you may ask? I actually dont have a set roof but as a beginner i dont want to spend too much. How much do I need to spend to get a car worth buying?

I have been checking out the Mini Revo but i feel that it can be a bit too small. I have also heard that its not that durable.

What cars do you guys suggest?

I'd say get a full size E-Revo.

Yeah but its twice the cost and as a first car? Not too sure if i want to spend that amount on something new that i dont know if i will do in 6 months. Thats why im looking for more of an entry car.

First off, you're not annoying, you're smart by asking questions. Entry point RC recommendations are always a little tricky. Most RTR kits don't have the build quality and durability needed to survive weekend bashing for very long. People get disappointed because they break parts and end up having to spend more money and time making repairs. On the flip side people don't want to spend a bunch of money and find out RC'ing is not their thing.

A 4wd monster truck is going set you back 300 - 500 bucks depending on features. A Traxxas truck is probably your best option at a reasonable price point. You can also look at the Associated trucks.

Ultimately you will have to decide how much you want to spend. Either way you will have a great time but beware this hobby can become addictive.

Well, come to think of it, the 1/16 Summit VXL might be a good choice. A little more truck-like than the 1/16 E-Revo.

That will be a fun truck for you. Just remember it's smaller and therefore a little less capable of handling rough terrain than a big truck (stating the obvious here). If you haven't already done so check out Youtube reviews and running videos to get an idea of the trucks abilities.

Thanks for your comments and yeah, i have been checking out this guys channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/UltimateRCnetwork Lots and lots of test.as far as i have understood the 1/16 summit and revo are pretty much the same, other shocks but mostly the same. A 1/16 is very convenient but i have a feeling that they can be a bit too small. I will give the summit a look though!

Nope same shocks but other axles! and other suspension arms to give better ground clearence. Sounds good!

If your considering something of the mine e revo size, look into the savage xs. I dont own one, but they look tough, and are very capable. If you don't want to spend too much, then 1 10 might be good. 1 8 is going to cost alot, and usually has a dual battery setup making it even more costly.

Yeah, I think they are real fun. See plenty of them running around the track, great trucks, especially if you're still easing into RC. If you can swing it the 1/10 Summit or Stampede are both beasts.

I too am new to the hobby. I got the ECX Ruckus. And I love what I got so far. Reviews online say it's a great RC for the price and I agree. From what I have read, the body is a huge improvement over the previous years and the controls are above par in my book. The tires are big enough to make it's way through tall grass without 4WD. Originally I wanted a 4WD RC, but I found that I could get more car (truck) for the same amount of money. The thing has good speed (for a beginner truck) and the truck is durable. My favorite thing to do now is deliberately get it to do cartwheels. My girls love it! Horizon has been a great RC company to deal with as well. Their customer support has been great. I call them and ask them the dumb questions I'm to embarrassed to ask my local hobby shop.

I'm glad to hear the Ruckus is being put through some torture tests and someone is loving it! I'd have a 4wd version by now if only ECX would offer Ruckus kits. I know it will probably never happen, and I could do like the "chop shops" do, but that takes time and effort. I'd rather put my effort into building right from the get go.

I was just offered to buy a used 1/10 Summit. I will probably have a look at it tomorrow. Its said to be in good condition. Ita a friend of a friend who has it.. Deal? Perhaps! :)

Possibly. Just make sure everything is in working order. The Summit has a lot of moving parts and a lot of features, so it is more prone to breaking down in some areas. That's why I'd recommend a new one, smaller, and brushless, but if you get a good deal on a large one then go for it.

Hey guys and thanks for your advice.

I went to try the Summit today. It just felt right so im currently letting it dry up from a run in the snow :) It felt great. Loved the lockable differentials. It may not be as quick as what i first was looking for but right now i dont really care about that.

Now i feel the need to buy some lipos :cool:
