Car for a beginner
 

Hey there!!! I'm spanish and I'm 25 years old. I've notice that my girlfriend is allways looking for people using RC cars. I've thought about buying 2 cheap models and play together as we never tried something from this hobbie but we both like it.

I don't know if I'm posting in the right place of the forum. But I would really appreciate some help. I'm interested in a model under 100$ and here in Spain I'm not finding any good shop, so I'm literally looking every single model in Aliexpress/Gearbest. We would prefer an off-road car to play in the forest we have next to home.

Can you help me to choose one?

Well, I'll tell you a few things to consider.

1/18th can be cheap enough to meet you $100 However, the motors at that scale tend to be weak and can burn out easily if they get too warm; which can happen easily. So, keep that in mind.

Many cheap brands are just that, cheap. They might work ok for a bit, but then if something breaks, you might be out of luck on getting parts. Doesn't matter how cheap it is if parts are not available, cause you WILL break something sooner or later. So, before you buy some wltoys or some other odd name, check on the availability of parts. Isn't much fun to wait a month, either.

If you go with a 1/18th, for sure get 4x4. That low ground clearance needs all the help it can get.

If you can, I'd find a decent 1/10th scale. A few reasons is that general parts are usually more standardized, such as pinions and spurs. specific parts can be easier to find since 1/10th is more common than 8/12/16/18.

A little more weight and ground clearance than 1/18th for better off-road ability. 4x4 is even better.

The motors in 1/10th are also better, on average.

1/10th is more expensive though.

A while back, I did get a dromida sct. It has been loads of fun, but as I mentioned, the motors are weak. So, if you get something like that, I'd pony up a bit more cash and get the brushless version. Or look for an associated/losi car, they seem to be a bit stronger.

Also, don't be afraid to check something like ebay for something used, but in decent shape.

You might be looking for certain models, but don't rule anything out. Oh, and don't fall for toys using 27/49 mhz.

Well I did manage to find the first 1 should have a brushed 390 motor. I am going to assume the second truck is the same. I can't speak to their reliability, but a 370 brushed motor has issues pushing a 1/18th around. These are 1/12 using only a 390. They look ok, but be prepared to possibly pull things apart a bit to get the cars ready. My dromidas I had to do a number of things to get them to actually run decent. Fill the shocks up and other things. I know these are RTR, but pulling things apart is good practice anyways. Also, while I did find parts, to an extent, I can't say how long they would take to receive if you need them.
So, if you get those, go into it knowing you may need to work in them a bit to get them to function properly, and that they may or may not last long, depending on how you drive them.
I do like the second truck better, looks nicer.

Looks like to that Gearbeast car don't have available spare parts easily, so that is problem if something or when something broken :) If i had to choice from those two, i would order Alieexpress car.

I do not recommend buying the Chinese model from AliExpress\Gearbest. Better to buy a branded model (Traxxas, Losi, Team Assotiated", ARRMA)

I had a Chinese model.
It was constantly breaking down.
P.S. If there is not enough money for a new one. You can buy used branded

I had that 9115 car, it costs 50$, and after 1 year of fixing and replacing broken parts i checked how much i have spent on parts... it was over 100$.
its nice car, you can get replacement parts but it breaks a lot.
