Tamiya Brat Scorcher Build
I started working on my Brat Chassis. I wanted to do away with the torsion style front end and did not want to spend $35+ for shock towers so I made my own and picked up a pair of 70mm RC4WD scale shocks. Then I took my unfinished Sand Scorcher body off my SS and went about fitting it to my Brat chassis. So far I like the proportions. I plan on making a mount off back transmission to hold a scale motor to fill in the back a little. I am looking for an STL file I can send my buddy to print for me. I plan to rust out/weather this bug. No worries, I have a new body for the real Sand Scorcher when I get this Brat done and my Frog will keep it's original suspension.

Good job on your project 56-jeephead. Knowing what I know now, actual oil filled dampers should have been included from the get go on that Tamiya chassis. Being young, and dumb, I was sucked in by Tamiya's box art.
Body off pictures coming up next. Right?;) |
So the uprights for the shocks aren't as pretty as the $40 ones...the seem to work. Anyways they are mostly hidden under the body.

The theaded portion seemed to go all the way through so I cut them to size and had planned to run a screw though body into post. Unfortunately they stopped just before the cut mark. So I drilled out center stop in hopes of picking up the other side but fell short. I plan to tap this end to 4/40 or so. Of course Ace Hardware only goes down to 6 on taps. Will get something off line. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...fafcb9dae5.jpg Never liked the "Wire" steering links. Drilled out the 3mm? Tie rod ends and used Tamiya blue 5mm. Finding small threaded rod locally is hard. I had 1 from somewhere but needed 2. Found the longest 4/40 screw and cut the head off. I have to tweak the toe-in a little, once I get it just right I will run some shrink tubing from end to end to make it look better. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...9760f92fcd.jpg The RX box came from my TT-02 kit and fits the platform perfectly. ESC is the Quicrun 1060. Motor is the Tamiya Sport Tuned..of course. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...30dd10033e.jpg The front body mount is a piece of thin aluminium i bent. I did not want to hack chassis up and tried to make use of existing holes. So I notched the new mount to preserve the original 1. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...3b8a70bf6d.jpg I wanted to make use of the Sand Scorcher body's front mounting hole. The Frog front post was perfect but the threads were designed to screw into the front bumper mount plastic. I looked at the cut off piece from 1 of the links I had cut down. Ran a 1/8th drill bit through and was able to thread post into it. A few spacers to get the fit just right. Nice and solid. Best part is it is all hidden behind front clip. |

Had to add a apacer on left side because the angle seemed to sharp going up to servo. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...f30629989e.jpg Steering links look much better covered up. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...65ce3a6beb.jpg Made rear tranny plate to mount 3D motor I have yet to locate. |
Thought I would try fabricating a rear deck out of styrene because I know absolute jack about how to do it. Just temping it in there. Not sure if it will look right, I have some super glue and body filler to make her pretty.
