Today I killed my Traxxas Slash VXL. I was able to get the ESC housing open, but it looks like they put a clear epoxy over all of the components to waterproof them. Am I screwed or is there a way to strip it down to replace a capacitor and torn data wires?

Unless you have some decent training you should not be trying to repair an ESC. Since you have asked this question you have shown you haven't got decent training. They put that clear epoxy there to keep you out. Buy a new one.

When I first got into electronics 50 years ago I was taught a power supply was a stable oscillator and an oscillator was an unstable power supply. I did a few early on and got bit a few times by some high voltage, high frequency units. I decided then that I don't do squigglies, I do 1's and 0's.

I don't think you're going to get the epoxy out. I think it's there for waterproofing, stops vibration from breaking the solder joints, and to keep you from trying to fix it. They don't want you to fix it. They want you to buy a new one.

It's being replaced by Traxxas because Traxxas is amazing.
