Motor problem
 

I just changed motors on my Duratrax Evader ST to try and get more speed, but it didn't work. I went from everything stock in it to a new ESC and a Venom 15 turn motor and a 16 tooth pinion gear from the stock 20 tooth. The truck isn't any faster though run times are now half what they used to be and my batteries are VERY hot after a run.

Any ideas on how to get more speed? I also have a Peak Performance Jaguar 23 turn motor but haven't tried that, although the stock motor is a 20 turn. All I al looking to do is get the speed up 5 mph or so without killing run time too badly. My ESC can handle down to a 13 turn motor so any ideas would be welcome.

Anyone know the RMPs of the stock motor? Nobody seems to post RPM numbers anymore for motors.

1. what typ of motor is it?

2. what type of ESC is it

3. did you break in the motor

4. what is your spur gear size

5. did you notice slow speeds right away or did it happen over time

If you have good accelleration but no top end your pinion might be too small. But, that combination should have resulted in a faster truck. You'll want to check your transmission for worn gears, poor mesh, worn slipper, worn ball diff, etc as perhaps they are causing problems.

Could it be something simple lke the dual rate on your radio or you need to re-set your ESC?

The ESC is a Futaba MC3003 and the motor is a Venom 15 turn with a 16 tooth pinion, spur gear is the stock 88 tooth I think, and my radio doesn't have dual rates on the throttle channel.

I did not break in the motor. The differential is locked and the slipper clutch is also. I noticed the slow speed right away. It isn't any faster than stock with the 20 turn motor and 20 tooth pinion gear.

Good point on the ESC reset, I will try that.

for a 15 turn motor you might want to try a 18 or 19 pinion...and since you didnt break it in it may take a few runs until you get good performance... and since that motor was only $18 i woudnt expect it to be very fast

All Ive heard from about gazillion forums is that, that motor is not very good. Other people have also complained about these same motors. Heres my idea: get a new motor. I have a evader st with deans plugs, stock esc and a chameleon pro 2 19t motor. My car hits about 40mph. Purchase the conectors and motor and you wont be disappointed. $29.99 at e hobbies.com deans connectors on tower hobbies for $2.99 a pack. Any other questions ill have o problems anwsering just pm me. My pinion is 20t and spur is 88t I am yet going to go up pinion and that should increase my top end speed.

Anyone think I should try the stock 20 tooth pinion on the Venom motor or would that be too much?

I took the motor out and removed the brushes and cleaned the ends of them, then spun the shaft in my drill press for about 10 minutes at 3200 RPM and that should be a perfect break in for it.

Funny, my Peak Performance Jaguar 23 turn with the stock gearing is faster than the Venom and doesn't come out hot at all.

I think I may pitch the Venom and get a Chameleon 2, P2K2 Pro, or even try the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem I have here still in the package for one of my planes.

# of turns doesn't mean much if the quality isn't there, just compare the 20 turn photon to a monster stock motor. The photon is slower than the 27 turn stock motor, but of course the monster costs $37 instead of $15 or $20.

Just get a SS5800 and never worry about this stuff again....

I've had two different modified motors for my RC10B3. First I got a Reedy Ti ($90) and that thing screamed! But it was very high maintenece requiring com cuts and new brushes constantly, so then I bought a Trinity Speedgems Pro ($35), which was nice. The Reedy was fast and ran very cool, kept the batteries and ESC cool, but that Speedgems is very good on brushes. I'd give the Speedgems a try.

We forgot to ask, what kind of batteries and charger are you using.

If your batteries and charger are weak you could have a 8 turn motor and it wouldnt be be very fast.

Chargers are a Great Planes Triton and an FMA Supernova, both proven good from my electric airplane flying.

Batteries are Duratrax 1500 packs.

wow I never heard of breaking in motors with an external source i.e. drill press. I thought you could just run it on it's own with low voltage.

You can run it on it's own at low voltage also, this is just a trick I have learned to keep all arching and pitting from happening on the brushes.
