Electric or Nitro?
 

One of my friends on here wants a truck, he's never owned one before and VERY seldomly drove one. He's driven maybe three times. He knows almost absolutely NOTHING about rc. But he still insists that it'd be better for him to get a nitro for a first truck. He thinks it'd be cheaper than to get a Traxxas Stampede RTR, and order a new motor with it. The only reason he wants a nitro is for the speed. I told him that electrics can easily go just as fast as most nitros. But, he thinks it's nonsense to order a new motor with the stampede. Although it'd be cheaper than ordering a nitro. He keeps trying to prove to me that nitro's are just as easy to maintain and run as an electric. What do you guys think? Keep in mind, he knows almost nothing about rc.

id go nitro. with the help of a good rc shop theyre quite easy to run. i knew very little about rcs when i got mine and although it took me over 2 weeks, i got it running well. the only thing you need to run nitro is patience and an area to run them that doesnt mind a lot of noise.

Well i prefer nitro, but in this case i would have to go with electric. I've got an electric touring car and a nitro touring car and the electric (tamiya TL-01) was much easier to maintain and look after than a nitro ever will be. After over a year with my nitro TS-4 (thunder tiger) i have just managed to get it tuned properly after i killed the stock engine, it is on its third clutch and i have spent £££ on replacing parts and other stuff.

Whatever he gets he will be happy with, but unless he has the patience and knowhow to operate a nitro model he should go with the electric option.

yeah electric then. nitros can be a pain if you dont know anyone who knows about them.

yeah me too. i know people that know a lot about nitro but me being the stubbourn git that i am i thought i could fix anything myself. i couldnt figure out what was wrong with it and got really wound up about it. turns out the glow starter was flat. how was i supposed to know it only lasted 5 minutes from a 10 hour charge? really enjoying it now though and am learning how to fix things as they break.

electric for first truck, especially if parts are not easily available.... electric is easier for the first timer to use... not necessarily cheaper, but less tinkering needed.. when you get used to all the r/c stuff, then decide if you want to go with nitro or stay with electric or do what I do... get both........

yeah me and 2 mates all bought thunder tiger dt10s. weve been going back to the shop at least 3 times a week to get new parts. luckily the shop always has spare parts for them. maybe its because they break so often. if we didnt have a place to get spares we'd be screwed.

looks like its 100% for electric since im the only one who said nitro and i retract my initial vote

I am a diehard nitro fanatic. But my first real r/c was electric, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Just figuring out how the vehicle works is hard enough. Adding an engine on top of that gets to be too much for someone with limited experience. Save him the headaches, don't let him get a nitro.

wheres a good place to order fuel from in the uk then cos i always thought it would be a bit dodgy to send fule through the post.

how do i find out the percentage of the fuel im using? mine doesnt seem to have a percentage on it. its model technics and has dynaglo 5 written on the front at the bottom right

I'm back, ok, ha ha, you have 5% Nitro fuel. Unlucky! Ok, heres what I would do:

Go on modelsport now and order a gallon of the 30% Big Bang Model Technics fuel.
Go outside, lay your crapp 5% fuel on the ground in a funky pattern (I would make the outline of a "Z" like in the Mask of Zorrow film [8D]), then, get a match, place the match to the fuel and stand back... Nitro burns a cool colour... Seriously dude, don't even bother finishing off your 5%. It should be illegal to use anything weaker than 20% in a car!. lol :)

i just looked on google for dynaglo 5. its 5% nitro. its har to find places that sell it on the internet though

i cant find anything wrong with the fuel. its still runs like stink. doesnt changing fuels mean i have to run it in again?
