Warhead: First Impressions

1 Attachment(s)
i finally got a chance to break in my new warhead, and this thing is awsome. as usual, the break in was tedious. the first start was very hard but once i did get it started it never died once. three days later, i had finished the 5 tank break in and started tuning it for performance. once that was done, a quick adjustment on the tranny and it was time to have some fun. the super tiger .27 puts out plenty of power that is transfered to the ground well. the 2 speed tranny worked flawlessly and it always shifted reliably into second gear. also, the reversing unit worked very well. the 220 cc fuel tank provides long runtimes so i had lots of bashing time in the front yard.:D

Wow, talk about big! So, how is this truck in comparison to its rival, the savvy?

well, ive never seen a savage except in a hobby shop, but i think its picked up where the savage left off. they widened the distance between the side plates to accomodate a fuel tank (a big one at that) and make it easier to work on. they also added aluminum shocks with shaft protectors. the plastic parts are some of the most beefy chassis components ive seen, and it seems that theyve gone through the lenghts to basically "overengineer" everything. im going to go bashing with it today, so ill keep you posted.:D;)

i just got done running 3 tanks through it at the park today and it was awsome. the engine put out tons of power and the tranny worked well. it seems that as it gets more fuel through it the engine is starting to run cooler. the suspension handled the terrain easily and the big fuel tank provided long run times. i havent had a chance yet to see if i broke anything but it looks like it came through perfectly.:D

ill admit that it has a lot of features simalar to the savage, but i think that was the point. they took what was best in MT's out there and put it all together into one truck. and after a VERY brutal wait for it to become available, this is what they got, and i think its well worth it.

actually i think this car provides some pretty stiff competition to the savage. i think their performance envelopes are about equal, its just i think you cant beat the 400 dollar price tag that gives you cvd's, a .27, a reversable tranny, etc.

have a friend thinking about getting a warhead.i have a savage that he is running now.and i can tell you from experience, the savage is a great truck.very tough.i have never really been happy with the handling for racing, thats why i bought an lsp,and the one way bearing and the rotostart system,i hated.would have much rather seen a starter box accessible engine like the warhead has.if the warhead is close to being as durable as the savage,it will be a better truck.aluminum shocks, cvds, lower cg,and startbox ready you just cant beat that.

well the problem is unless the warhead becomes a hit like the savage you aren't going to have many hop up parts for it and actually it came out a few months ago. Its a gamble to go for the included extra features

RE: Warhead: First Impressions

why would it be a gamble to go for the extra features? they all work fine on mine.

for wide open, how do keep your .27 cool enough to get through a full tank. i know thoses engines run very hot, but dam they keep over heating and shuting off, and if i go any richer ill bog the dam thing out. any thoughts?

There's a lot of negative side of the warhead by duratrack, you may check the warhead trends. check the trends forum for warheads.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3643360/tm.htm

Sounds like your piston and sleeve is worn. When that happens, the sleeve expands when the engine heats up, and the engine loses compression and will just die and wont start back until it has cooled off. A new piston and sleeve, a repinch, or a new engine all together would be the fix for that.

I was just all over the Duratrax website trying to find the Warhead before I realized that this is a 6 year old post. Apparently, the Savage was just too much competitionhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...unge_smile.gif.

The Warhead had many problems when it was released , DT did update it and fix some of its flaws but it had already earned itself a bad name by then and Truggies started to become popular and DT turned the Warhead into the DTX and added some racier rubber and lowered it down some to look like a truggy . IDK if they still offer the DTX as it didnt sell very well either .

Besides the Evader, Duratrax has never really has good luck selling cars.

cummins driver 07-17-2011 07:55 AM

RE: Warhead: First Impressions

Yeah, the evader is really the main thing that keeps them going i believe. That and their chargers, batteries, etc...

Thats one reason i wouldnt really ever feel comfortable buying from duratrax. They never keep their models around long(besides the evader), and when they are gone, parts are harder to get and you cant get anything out of them if you want to sell them. Just not a good situation to be in.

Mine always worked well too. I liked my onyx 230 charger as well. Just traded it because someone offered me a crazy good trade for it:D Gave $40 for the charger used. Traded it for a nitro truck. Sold the truck for $160[8D]
