gearing problem..., or not?
 

Hi guys. I'm running a Tamiya TA-05 twin-belt, on-road chassis right now with a 15x2 (Venom Fireball) motor. I'm using a gearing of 70/24. I don't think that's overgearing, since the motor and battery both stays very cool after a run. The ESC heats up a lot though. What is the problem here? Is it just a case of a cheap ESC (Novak XRS)?

I also run a TA-05 and is that the stock gearing or is it modified. Another thing on that, how have you delt with the low spur gear poking out near the bottom of the chassis ? Does your gearing change that ?

The stock gearing is 70/22. Currently, I am using that set-up and I switch ESC to a Duratrax Intellispeed 12t. Going to switch again to an LRP Quantum Super Reverse 2. The gearing still leaves the spur gear in that same vulnerable place. [&o] I haven't had a problem with the spur gear yet, so.... no complaints.

How do you drive? If you a slower driver, to conserve battery for longer runtimes, the ESC may actually heat up more than if you were going fast, as it has to do a lot of resisting..

Yeah, I think it's because I tend to drive slow. My street is not long enough, and there are parked cars, so I can't drive too fast. [:o] Anyways, my problems should be solved with the installation of the LRP Quantum Super Reverse 2 ESC. I had wanted to save some money before, but seems like I need a good ESC nonetheless. I'm not racing, just cruising my own street and drifting. ;)

like rxbpy said when you are driving and using part throttle mostly, you are using the electronic resistor part of the esc (transistors) which will get rather warm no matter which esc you use unless you use one with a fan on it. They do make a small fan that will help that, there are several that would work.

If when you were using the Duratrax Intellispeed 12t esc and it did not get so hot it thermalled..... got hot and quit till it cooled off..... you should be fine cause the motor is not hot and the batteries are not hot which say you are not using very much of a draw on the batteries.

Just be sure all connections at battery, esc and motor are good connections and are not getting hot and causing high resistance which would cause the same problem. But I think it is from running slow.
