idle trouble... please help!
 

hello,

just about managed to get to grips with my new engine (im new to nitro) on my v one s, but cant get the darn thing to idle now??? when i close carb it still runs high. is it possible to have a leak? also, where should my low needle be? and... what happens if i run my engine without a gasket on my plug?

Chris,

It is possible to have air leaks. Check your head bolts, carb connection, fuel tank and lines. If your idle screw has your carb open more than about 1mm it'll idle to high. Check your manual for low speed needle adjustment if you have one. If not start at about 2 turns out.

Ok if you remove the Gasket under the Glow plug, you are REDUCING COMPRESSION. This, combined with a bad glow plug can lead to Pre Ignotion, Detonation, and all kinds of BAD stuff. NEVER do that unless you know what your doing! Even then your running a risk.

This has nothing to do with a high idle, If your carb is closed and still your idling high, it tell sme that your engine is still getting its air/fuel mixture from somewhere. Are you sure your carb doesnt have a leak somewhere? Try using silicone sealnt and getting it airtight.

But heck no air leak can provide fuel and air to your motor. I think I can be pretty sure that something screwy is goin on with your carb. Are you sure it is in fact closed? Check your set screw. The set screw determines how much the carb can close. If this screw is set wrong, it will feel like the carb is closing but the screw is actually stopping the carb from closing any further.

And remember, when you change something, leave everythign else alone! That way ou know if changing that one thing helped or not.

While the general message you're trying to send is good advice for newbies...
When you remove the gasket from under the glowplug... you are INCREASING compression.
(By inserting the plug further into the combustion chamber, you reduce the volume, increasing CR)

correct, same thing can happen if you get the wrong glow plug. A guy loaned me one out of his toolbox once( the track was out of stock) it turned out to be a long plug and the car ran very hot.
