Stronger drive shafts for RS4 3?
 

I installed a OS 18 TZ in my RS4 3 and now I keep breaking the center shafts. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I have seen the GPM swing shafts on ebay, Does anyone know if these are stronger then the stock DB's or if I can get stronger DB's?

yes the gpm shafts are stronger than dogbones. Less flex, play and stronger construction... no way the stock bones will last with the 18tz

In a word it’s a missile. This motor is a .21 big block in disguise.
Now for the down side or sides. I bought a RD Logics pipe that was supposed to fit the RS4 and it doesn’t, unless you don’t mind running without the right rear tire. So I bought the HPI header for the rear exhaust motor and it just clears the tire. I was still using the stock black aluminum pipe at this time when the one way started to slip. So I ordered a O.W. from bearing from Boca and so far so good. Then I bought the new shiny HPI pipe and man what difference that made. It jumped through 1st & 2nd gear so fast I wasn’t sure it was shifting a first until I did a ¾ throttle run so I could here the shift. By the way I am running 41 & 45 spur gears with the 18 (purple) & 23 (red) pinions which is the highest 2nd gear you can run (to my knowledge) and a medium first gear. BTW you have to mill or dremel the chassis to get the gears to mesh.
Now I have broken dog bone after dog bone. So I have installed the HPI cvd’s on the axels and after about six hard runs so far they are holding up. BUT the center shafts are another story, in those six hard runs to test the cvd’s I broke 2 rear center shafts and 1 front. Right now I am running the motor rich until I find a fix for the center shafts. But as long as the shafts stay in, it flies.
One more thing, you must run foam tires. I tried some of the high traction rubbers and they just don’t work with this kind of power.

If I were you al18ss you will need that TZ if you want to stay behind me with my NT1 (a.k.a Rocket). Just to show you what a sport I am al18ss I am willing to put half of the money down for your new TZ just to make you feel good when I fly by you on the track..

The shocks are the HPI threaded aluminum and the turnbuckles are the ones that came with the 18SS kit with RPM ends. It looks so clean for the moment because that’s a new chassis.

Fox,

I'm suprised you aren't chewing up the 45 tooth pinion gear because you have a mismatch.

18 + 45 = 63

23 + 41 = 64


When doing gearing, you want the sum of the first set to match the sum of the second set. This ensures the same amount of gear mesh in both sets.

You could use a 39T pinion for second and pick your first gear pinion and spurs based on what you have and/or want.

Give some thought towards a 41T 1st and 39T second with highest spurs you could get (so 23 and 21) if you have a lot of wheel spin off the line

My personal setup is the 43T/39T pinions with the stock red spurs (19 and 23). I have a 18ss with RD logics turbo II pipe and with this gearing I reduced my wheel spin (from the stock gearing)

That's what the gear charts shows for this car. All of the pinions are the same diameter with a little creative teeth spacing. Down at the bottom of the chart it states that you can use any 1st gear pinion with any 2nd gear pinion.

yes i moved to antarctica to slide with the penguins...

yeah you can use any 1st gear pinion with 2nd gear pinions but i think youll need corresponding spurs with it..

That car in the video was outrageous [X(] - Not only can it drift like a monster but it looks way good doing it! The whole HPI lighting up on the side thing was incredible. Very cool! - thanks for posting it HeLLsGoD.

I recently purchased the gold pinion gears and I will be heading out to track this weekend so hopefully there will be some kind of difference in bottom end. We will see...

So how are the shafts holding up are they TZ tough I keep snapping dog bones with my CVR i could just imagine the TZ!!! So whats the deal so far am i going to buy some or what??? ..lol..

Buy them! I have alot of runs and center shafts and they are doing great. Now I have broken one of my rear MIP cvd’s so I thinking of ordering the universal axel shafts from GPM also.

lol man i fear that TZ is teasing me to buy it but i fear it cuz lol i know imma spend alot of cash in my car cuz i break stuff with my cvr i can only imagine the TZ

i always break a suspension arm yesterday i broke the steering thing a screw broke so and so i got bad luck :(

OK WOW! [X(] So now I definitely want a TZ! That engine is no joke. Glad to hear the center shafts are holding up Fox, what are your plans for replacing that spur gear? I haven't seen metal or hardened spur gears for our cars and it seems like you're gonna need them.
