Can you pop-start a nitro engine?
I'm new to Nitro powered things, but, am used to standard cars, and atv's. I know you can popstart a car, but, can you pop-start a nitro car? Like, can you heat the plug, then prime it, then just push the car and have it turn the engine over to make it fire?

You cant do that unless your clutch is melted together. RC clutches use a centrifugal clutch, and dont activate untill the engine part of the clutch reaches a certain rpm.

Oh. So it's like the primary clutch on a sled, where the peices come together, and pull the drive.

Yeah, if it werent for the clutch you'd be able to do it. But like a previous user said, the clutch only connects the crankshaft to the drivetrain when the crankshaft reaches a certain RPM.

It would be like trying to PUSH start your average go kart. They have centrifugal clutches not manual.

^^ Even I can answer that one.
No, it's not the same. There kind of alike, but not very. Bump starting spins the crankshaft, by using a starter box, or a dremel with a different tip. Pop starting, is pushing the vehicle till it turns over, and fires. |

Yeah but bump starting a 1:1 car is when you push it 'till it starts ;)

Bump starting is pushing a car in second (first and third might work depending) with the clutch down, as soon as you reach max speed you let go of the clutch untill the engine turns over, then you press the clutch again and play with the throttle untill the engine runs smoothly. It also works in reverse (pushing the car backwards and being in reverse gear). I challenge you to find some buddies and simply push a car untill it starts :eek:

The process is as follows. The vehicle transmission is placed in either first or second gear, and the clutch is depressed. The key must be in the run position. The car is then rolled forward either by gravity when on a hill or by additional persons or vehicles pushing. Once the car is moving 3-5mph the clutch is engaged abruptly. This causes the movement of the vehicle to drive the engine back through the transmission. This will turn the engine over in much the same way as the starting motor would. Once the engine has started, the clutch can be quickly disengaged to avoid stalling the car, but this is not always necessary. |

And you can pretty much push a car with an auto trans all day long an it's not going to start (and yes, I know that there are a couple of exceptions).
The only way it's possable to do a push, bump, jump (whatever word you want to use) start with a nitro vehicle is if the vehicle is a direct drive system (no clutch) and there are just not too many of them around. |

I use to set in the seat with the door open with one foot on the clutch and the ohter pushing on the ground. Mind you it wasn't fun but it worked. With a bigger heavyer car this wouldn't have been possible, unless you were one of those guys in the worlds strongest men compution. :) |

my dad has a friend who used to race nitro RC cars when he was a kid and he said that he had a direct drive from the motor to the diffs... so he could put a tire on a starter box... and you know the rest. Don't know if he used a glow heater but that is how (in theory) you could bump start an engine, don't know if it would really work though:eek:

No it won't work as others have said the clutch wont allow it but A bump stater uses the flywheel not the clutch to turn over the engine
