Ebay

Below is a example of something ebay calles "shill" bidding...This is when 2 computers are used to pump up the price on 1 product. It involves either 1 person and 2 computers- or 2 people and 2 computers. When EBAY detects this has happened the seller is generally gets a 30 day suspension....Check with EBAY as to the actual rules on "shill" bidding.

Heres the scam..... You have a auction going for a Fioroni center storm diff. I bid 102.50, the next highest bid was 65.00. Five entire days go by without a single bid after my bid for 102.50........... Less than one hour before the auction ended, a friend of the seller bids 105.00 to get the buyer (me-the "fish") to bid more money. Guess what? I wasn't home or I would have gladly bid more and paid $150.00.

It is easy to see when this happens because the chain of events is explained below.....If people were being honest, a item wouldn't go 5 days without a bid and then 1 hour to 1 minute ( the one minute is a hard one to deny) before auction ends, a bid barely higher than yours comes in.

Sellers do this to pump up the sale price of their stuff on ebay by having a buddy keep outbidding, when they know there is a "fish" on the line. A fish is someone who has emailed alot of questions because they are interested.

Not all ebayers do this...but as a BUYER I can tell you it only takes 1 or 2 times and your ebay experience has been ruined...

Yes, there are companies who will wait to the end of the auction and place a bid for you, but there is a charge for each "snipe" and there isn't a guarantee that the process will work.

This "SHILL" bidding can and does happen, it is called "SHILL BIDING" and it's when 1 person uses 2 computers for the purpose of inflating the sale price. Ebay knows about it thats why they established a term for the practice. Yes it is against the rules, but its a loophole that cant be plugged. Beware.

i actually just had a similar experience but i was the seller!!!
The way this scam worked was like this...
I (the seller) put two motors on ebay that were worth about $60-$80. Scumbag bids a huge amount of money with two of his ebay accounts. He bids, and then outbids himself with his other name, over and over again.
When the auction ended and i didnt get any response from the highest bidder i (as usual) contacted the next highest bidder to see if he was interested. Turns out this dumbass used his last name in both of his e-mail address' and i found out both of the bidders were the same guy!!! Of course when i contacted bidder #2 he said he only had the cash to buy ONE of the motors. I guess he only wanted one of them so he figured he'd pull this scam. scum!!!!!
Oh and by the way, this guy screwed somebody on rcmt.net when trading r/c's. Both of us contacted ebay and he is no longer a member.....or at least under those two name.
Ebay is a great place to find parts CHEAP, but you have to watch out for yourself. Only bid what you want to pay, and nothing more.

I don't want to say your wrong, but, when I find something I want on ebay and the timing is right, I will bid up to the last minute. I refresh the screen every few seconds to watch the count down. I have been in several bidding wars. If it gets to steep I quit. Thats why they call it an auction. I also have over 43 purchases on ebay without a single problem or felt cheated when it was over with. I'm not saying that what you described doesn't happen, but there is always the chance to bail. Even live auctions have plants in the crowd to bid up the prices. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Yha I jus found this on some spare parts I was going to buy, but noooooo they always use there 2nd name to jack up the price to what they watn for it. I dont fall for that crap. I bid what im willing to pay my first time, if it gets topped then forget it, ebay has gotten so dishonest in the past few years... I rather buy and risk it on these forums then from a scammer on ebay :(

I buy stuff on ebay a lot and I always wait till the last hour or
so to start bidding. If you start bidding when the auction opens
other people who want it will keep trying to outbid you for
a week driving the price up higher and higher. thats no way to get stuff cheep. Better to make them think you are not interested
till the last. that way they wont bid as much because they think there is not
that much competition.

DSA.308 04-05-2003 11:09 PM

Ebay

Thats excactly my point! I had a honest bid of $102.50 with a week left in the auction, a fair price to pay and sell, for the product I was buying. A entire week goes by without a bid.....If there was interest in the item the seller should be happy I bid soo much soo quick. By me doing that the seller stands a better chance to get more money. By me setting the mark high early on, I either dominate the auction and win the item, or a bunch of people want it and he gets almost retail. However, I think I was outed by the seller or a buddy, because he fully expected someone else to outbid me, and when they didn't he wasn't going to honor my bid, because he wanted more money. He simply went in and bid 2.50 more than me, didn't make his accomplice pay for the item, and now he can re-list it, or keep it!

First of all, there is a thing called auction watch and that will watch the item to the last minute and then automatically bid the price....Presto you win!

Next most people will let items sit with no bids to keep the final price low! If you wait till the last minute and bid maybe the other guy will be out of town....And you will get a excellent deal DuH!

I HATE THE MORONS WHO HAVE BIDDING WARS FOR SIX DAYS THEN HAVE RUN THE PRICE UP TO MORE THAN HOBBYSHOP PRICES! What kinda deal is that!

You are mad because you lost an auction...Thats part of the fun of auctions! Either stay home, or get a sniperwatch to bid your auction at the last minute!

I can't even believe this is a thread, This is stupid!

Sorry but grow up!

buyrbware 04-06-2003 12:12 AM

Give me a break

LEARN EBAY RULES>>>>>>>

you can request seller and bidder info to see home addresses so you know that you seller is from i.e IOWA and the guy that just out bid you for the freakin $2.50 is from Florida...Yes sometimes crap that is dishonest happens, but you couldhave typed in a higher bid and probably won that last minute auction! And still got the item for a fair price..

I do alot of business, selling and buying on ebay..And I play honest, sometimes you win sometimes you lose....But if it is such a great deal then bid high so you don't get snagged in the end!

What are you talking about????? IF you read the first thread carefully and see I am not mad I lost a auction.....I am aware enough to see that the seller was going to get less $ then he wanted, so he had a friend win the auction for 2.00 more. If you dont like the thread dont read it.

I am not sling anything....Your whinning cause you lost an auction. And some how you Just know that the seller cheated you!!!???

All I'm saying is that from a sellers point of view that is very hard to do...Because Ebay has made checks and double checks on things like that happening.....Plus you as a bidder could check that info out to see if the guy cheated you!!! Then you would have a complaint to file...As of Now all you have is a "I LOST AND I'M MAD" Gripe.....Research before you type.....I DO!!!

Sorry buyrbware when you put a member on "iggy" all I see is a box saying your on my ignore list and I dont have to read your post. Isn't iggy nice? Yes, it is.

I personally learned of this "loophole" from a person who does it all the time, true story. Checks and balances my AZ. All thats needed is the use of a different computer than the seller....I found out about this scam from a person who does it, thats how I was able to detect what happened. I feel sorry for people stupid enough to believe that ebay is impenetrable....... Anything can be manipulated, if you dont think so, your not thinking.

Sellers do this to pump up the sale price of their stuff on ebay by having a buddy keep outbidding, when they know there is a "fish" on the line. A fish is someone who has emailed alot of questions because they are interested. IE (ME). I WILL NEVER BUY FROM EBAY AGAIN, BECAUSE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUYER TO HAVE A GOOD EXPERIENCE IS RUINED BY SELLERS WHO ARE DISHONEST.

First, Yes this can happen with the buddy system. Does it often? NO! Did it happen to you? Doubt it! Just because thier is no bids for days doesn't mean some imparshial party isn't watching the item to get it at a low price, last minute good deal.....Most people don't even bid till the last hour just hoping the price has stayed low for the 6 days!

I was upset originally because I do alot of selling on ebay, more than most, and just because you think you got screwed, doesn't mean you did...By being in the bidding pool you have the right to see the sellers address and the winners address...If they are from the same town chances are you were the "fish". But if they both lived in different parts of the USA then chances are you just got OUT BiD...My point Before slamming Ebay, and people who sell on Ebay, Check out the facts....That's all I was saying! For all you know that item you bid on could have been one of mine! Maybe it was? So did I take it personally?....Yes, Should I? Probably Not....Am I aloud to state my opinion....yes, as freely as you did! You stated that sellers suck and I stated that morons start bidding 6 days prior to a auctions end and the final out come to that results in usally paying more than you would though Tower! So am I sorry?....No, but now at least you know where I was Coming from...Further more I as a seller get 50 to 60 emails a day from people asking questions that seem interested! 90 % of them you never hear from again Nor do they even bid half the time! I hope this helps you understand how ebay works, and the ends and outs of a auction..And as I stated there is a thing called SNIPERWATCH this will bid at the last minute for you at your given highest price. 99% of the time, results in you defeating your opponent and becoming victorious!

Some things are good to buy on ebay. But I've noticed you have to be careful because some folks will bid much higher then somethings are worth brand new! I've had probably around 75-100 transactions through ebay and have only had a problem with maybe 2 or so........People that I was selling stuff to and they would claim it came in broken or wasn't what I said I was selling....Just trying to collect insurance I guess. But it was forgotten about because both times I sent the items insured and if they left my house in one peace but then got to theirs broken they should have contacted UPS not me. So they realized that and dropped the issue. If the packages really did get to them in one piece or not I don't know But I do know that because I insured them it wasn't my problem. So you just have to be careful who you are dealing with out their and make a point to add positive comments to the sellers and buyers who are honest and get the products out efficiently so others will know who to and not to deal with.

Feel free to write your EBAY experiences bad or good, and tell if you were scammed how it worked- so others can be aware of possible outcomes....
