What makes the wheels on a truck spin opposite directions when you spin one while holding it? After I redid my diff on my XXX-NT they both spin the same direction now instead of opposite. Is this ok or do I need to fix it?

it's called limited slip.since wheels don't always have the same traction the diff alows one wheel to spin more than the other one(someone correct me if I'm wrong). The wheels are supposed to spin opposite one another you may put it back to gether wrong or not used enough grease it they spin when you put some force on them just add some more lube.

I think you may need to change that, although im not 100% sure.

so take it apart and regrease it all the sprockets and gears?

Rex2342 04-06-2003 07:25 AM

if it's not spinning at all you need to rebuild it if it spin when you put force on it just regrease

they spin, just not in opposite directions.....

Rex2342 04-06-2003 07:29 AM

then i think you need to rebuild it again. Do you have a manual? That will be a big help

ya I did it just like the manual said, maybe I didnt grease enough? Would the slipper clutch have anything to do with this?

I don't think the slipper has anything to do with the differential. If you hold one wheel will the other one spin at all?

Brodie Sinn 04-06-2003 07:43 AM

ya, easily

then i think they just need more grease or they need to be run around for a while so the can break in since you just rebuilt them

Don't worry about it, my xxxnt does the same thing.

if the slipper clutch is to loose then they will spin the same way,try tightening it before tearing the diff down again.

ok will do

Brodie Sinn 04-06-2003 09:17 PM

Ok I tightened the slipper and it still makes both wheels spin the same way so now Im going to tear down the diff and regrease it all.

the limited slip diff if for when you are drinving in a corner the outside wheel is traveling more distance than the inside wheel.

the diff allows the outside wheel to keep up without sliding.

if both wheels are spinning in the same direction then the diff is locked. try lossening the diff a bit till it allows the wheels to spin in opposite directions.

also you might need to lube the diff with diff grease, regular grease will not work.

good luck

hold the main gear and spin one tire does the other spin opposite then or still the same direction

Brodie Sinn 04-07-2003 04:19 AM

whats the main gear?

PAINT CHIP 04-07-2003 01:15 PM

the big gear that the clutch bell turns(clutch bell is the gear attatched to the motor,it turns the main gear(spur) witch spins the diff)well the easiest way to say it is grab ahold of the biggest gear on the buggy (while it is NOT running )and turn one tire if that dose not make the diff react then you have a problem.

Its not the slipper at all. You just tightened the ball diff too much. Just run around it will be fine. It wont cause any damage or anything.

I was gonna tear it down last night but I stripped the LAST FRIGGIN SCREW on the chassis for the tranny. So Im going to dremmel that **** out today and redo the diff. I have to have them spinning opposite ways because Im a friggin perfectionist.
