Ntc3 Weak Diffs?
Is it true that the diffs come apart easily on the ntc3?

Originally posted by dbow Lots of great points in this thread. One word...MUGEN! The TC3 is a very bad design, its amazing how some people come out here and support a car that has issues just because they own it. Simply run a search on "Diff" and you should find some threads talking about the NTC3 and the diffs cracking under normal racing conditions...Not crashing, just driving down the track. As for the winners circle...If you fall for that one then I feel sorry for you. The winners circle has nothing to do with the type of car, the winners circle is about someone getting paid to run a car, not about what the best car is. Ralph Burch wins because he is a factory driver and because he has an unlimted buget to race on. Ralph would be in the same placing not matter what car he drives. As for parts, the MUGEN MTX-3 is the newest technology and it may take a little time for parts to get out there, you can however purchase parts all day on the internet. As for having it on race day, if you dont have the parts like arms and such in your box, then you have a lot to learn about racing. Some mention the serpent cars, which are fine cars. The prices for thier parts howver are not fine. They rob the customer blind and only fill back orders when they reach a certain point. You WILL have problems finding serpent parts on the internet and the hobby shop because of the way they do business. I owned an impulse and sold it for that very reason. I got tired of wating for parts to come in. I have never had a problem getting MUGEN parts, they are quite available and the cost is along the lines of what HPI parts cost. Which is very cheap. The MTX-3 has the latest technology, you wont have to add a thing, parts are cheap and its the hottest thing on the track...Everyone wants one. As for MTX-3 going to NTC3 thats gotta be crazy, why would anyone want to go backwards in technology? Just mine Dbow |

We abuse the snot out of my cousin's Team Kit NTC3, and have never had a diff come apart. Thats not exactly survey data, but at least on this end we have never had a problem. They use essentially the same diff as the electric TC3, which I raced for a couple years and never had issues with.

hmm... the only problem I've heard is when people adjust them too tight the retaining bolt snaps clean off at the head after a bit of hard use but again that is only if its adjusted really tight like an 1/8 turn off instead of the 1/2 turn backed off. I've not heard its a common problem son the TC3 though. I've been runing my electric TC3 with a novak Bl and have yet to have a problem.

I heard people say that the NTC3 had a weak this and that, but have yet to experience anything.

Ntc3 Weak Diffs?
I run a NTC3 and race it pretty much every weekend. I only poped the front diff case after takeing a corner to hard and clipping the pipe. Im pretty sure it was due to the stress that was placed on it from the shock tower. That did the case in. So I replaced the shock towers w/ the Kfatory AL/carbon ones, and replaced the Diff cases F&R w/ Al ones. Slamed it into a wall head on the other night didnt do anything to the car and i was goin pretty close to 1/2 throtle when it happened.

Weak Diffs
Here's my story.
I was running my car for a few months now and I am very satisfied with my NTC3's performance. Though I have a bit of a problem on it's differential RING GEAR. The ring gear holes where the 12 bearings sits, is being chewed by the bearings. I was told that my Diffs are too tight but I just followed what's on the manual. I bought a new pair of ring gear and set it 1/8 loose more from the origianl 1/4 front and 1/2 rear. Ran the car for 2 tanks and checked my diffs again and noticed it is starting to chew the bearing holes. I loosen it 1/8 of turn more again both front and rear, but a poor performance is noticeable especially on exiting corners, no quick response on acceleration because of loose diffs. Is there an optional Hard Aluminum or Titanium for the RING Gears ? I guess this type of ring gear which is used on TC3 is not strong enough for NTC3. Any help would be much appreciated. |

I have a NTC3 RTR - with LOTS of hop ups. I bash the snot out of it. It ROCKS!!! With the 2 spd and new pinions and spur gears. It is extremely fast.
Original diffs are still in it. I have at least 25 or more tanks through this. On second day of owning it - I totaled the whole thing. Still the original diffs. They were fine. |

OK, I am on my 2nd season racing a NTC3. Last year between, real hard sweepers and from the occasional getting rubbed into a wall I went through 5 diff cases. I would either crack the center hole where the shock tower screws in or I would literally pull the screws out and almost separate it. I have run at least 10 gallons of fuel through this car ( 4 motors have been in it) I am going to rebuild the diffs for the first time this weekend. Only reason for this is one of the large diff bearings failed and debris from either the bearings or from where ever got in the diff case. So I why rebuild one when you can rebuild two. But getting back to the diff cases. I am not a fan of aluminum hop ups. these cars are heavy enough. I like the light plastic carbon crap we are custom to. so I was surfing ebay and found that guy who sells "The Fix" I was like, Man I can't believe how easy and cleaver it is. So I bought two. Man do they work. I have never had a diff case come apart again. No problems ever since then. As far as whose car is better? its what ever you are comfortable driving, Yeah new technology comes out daily, but every time you get a new car you have to learn how that car rides and what effects what. I race both electric and gas tc3's. I am just comfortable with them cause I know how to change what to effect something. You take a guy like Ralph Burch, Give him a old school 4-tec. He will still be just as good of a driver. If you can wheel a car well, it don't matter what you drive.
A recommendation to you guys that have smacked things hard enough that has broken diff cases. I can't tell you how many kids who have NTC3's and either lot bash them or smash them around a track have this problem. I see it over and over again. Spin the wheels on your car. Does your drive shaft have a slight wobble to it? Think about this, you hit something head on, you have enough force to break the diff case, do you think it stops there? NO! You have a chance that you might have bent your drive shaft which at speed will create vibrations that could destroy bearings, effect handling and alter your motors tune. Now if your Drive shaft is bent. And even if its slight you still need to check the following. Spin your wheels, do you feel any resistance at all? if you do you need to pull your tranny apart, even if you don't if you have a bent shaft I recommend this. Another problem that occurs is you can collapse the tranny, and what I mean by this is you can bring the two spur gears closer together. What can happen is you can force the 2 speed clutch housing off its bearing and shim it back into the 2 speed one way hub and what this causes to happen is this. The 3 screws that hold each spur gear together will rub into one another. That would be the resistance or the binding that you would feel, But I recommend you check for this anyway because if this happens int he first minute of a race, and you continue on, you can very easily rub the screws away and it would not be as easy to notice. But like I said. This is't the best car out there. Actually its yesterdays technology that allot of people are comfortable driving. Parts are cheap and real easy to get. I prefer to stick to what I know and what works. |

I have replaced most things except the motor, muffler and diifs are about only things I have not replaced from crashing. - Maybe few other small things but most car has been replaced.
