After going brushless...now it is time for 2.4ghz...anything good for entry level?? not too heavy in terms of pricing

I've always felt that the radio is just as, or maybe even more important than the car it goes into. Just bite the bullet and pick up a Futaba 3PM 2.4g radio. Tower has them for $199 but they have a $15 coupon code making it $185. Definately the best radio for the money.

Looks like Tac****!!!! [:'(] I would hate to feel how bad that radio is i n my hand. I would just get a cheap, entry level, proven system-Spektrum DX2.0.

I also have an Airtronics FX-3HSS, it was $150. It has the bells and whistles somebody would need for racing. Nice radio, as good as the $200 Futaba. They updated it with longer range for the same price, the new version should be out now...

I think I heard they are not as good and reliable as they seem to be...

Or to stay away from specific brands or versions of radio systems.

You can always buy a older radio that accepts modules and get a good price to start out. Then upgrade later to 2.4 at a good price. I never pay retail for anything. ;)

I bought mine as the combo. I think the combo pn went away though. Too bad people in this thread are ripping on it. Its a nice bare bones 2.4ghz set up, just what the OP asked for.

I bought it so I can use it with any "non race" rollers or kits I buy. $25 for each extra reciever is great, sure beats $90 for each extra Airtronics reciever. Also the recievers have no external antenna for a really clean install.

I got mine from a LHS that matches Tower's prices. Even though they were out of stock at Tower I had them within a week. [8D]

I'll probably get flamed for this, but here it goes.

You don't need 2.4ghz. I've been running FM on my trucks and planes for about 8 years. Certainly not as long as other people, but I don't think I have EVER had a problem with my radio system. I do a lot more flying than on-road type stuff, and I use a good solid Futaba FM radio system. I also use corona synthesized receivers in all my planes, and never have I once in the past 8 years lose control of a plane due to receiver or transmitter issues. Call me lucky, but that's just the case! 2.4ghz is the wave of the future, and I actually use it on my heli's, but to be honest, I'd take that extra money you're spending on 2.4ghz and put it towards a better FM system. Also, for the record, I have had issues with 2.4ghz reception. So it's not always flawless, but it's still very nice technology.

So basically, 2.4ghz and "entry level" are counter intuitive. If you're looking for an entry level radio, there's no point in going 2.4ghz. If you're not having reception issues with your current radio, what's the point of going 2.4ghz if you're not also getting new features to go with it?

Well, I for one can see the reason. I have many planes and run a 2.4 Ghz for that but only one truck and only planning on one truck... issue is during fun run nights. There could be 30-40 people out there and most are running 27 Mhz. It stinks having to sit on the side while someone else is running.

I was thinking of just buying a bunch of crystals to change freq. Still undecided. Still cheaper to do that. A really cheap 2.4 would be nice though...

Yeah, I deal with the same thing when flying gliders with a club. I guess I get lucky though, for some reason I never get anyone on my channel. I personally don't plan to go 2.4 for awhile. All the guys at the field are going to it, which is freeing up the FM channels!! The more 2.4 gets popular, the less I have to worry about.

can you provide any more info and review on the Tactic radio system? I've been looking at them also. I don't race so I don't think I need all the features of the higher end radios. I wouldn't mind an Airtronics MX3 FHSS-2, but the price of the RXs are too much for me. It would be nice to have digital trims and the respective memory of those trims for each vehicle, but I'm more concerned with interference and reception.

The more 2.4ghz becomes popular the cheaper the technology will be to produce. At some point everything will come with some form of spread spektrum. I'd personally be more than happy to give the Tactic system a try. Except for the fact that I don't race and never bash with more than 2-3 people, so the stock AM radios have been fine for my needs. Heck, I've got a couple of nice JR FM radios that I don't use close to all the features they have. And, in all the time I've been in the hobby I've only had frequency issues 1 time.
Also, if you could get the set from Tower, they have excelent customer service in case there's a problem with quality or performance. I'm 100% positive that you could exchange the system for something else or simply get a refund.

i have the futaba 2.4 gig i just bought another 2.4 gig
trans and reciver for 30 bucks its been flawless also
i think thats a great buy
