Unglueing tires!!
 

Hey guys, I have a Traxxas summit, and my little brother took it through a river last night, now the ires have tons of water in them, and weight like 3 LBS each, is there any way to unglue these tires, so I can remove the foams and have them dry out?

They can sometimes be successfully unglued by boiling or baking them. Acetone can also sometimes work.
But, IMHO, it's best to just buy a new set of rims and tires.

CA debonder is just a fancy name with a fancy price for acetone which you can buy by the quart from any hardware store.

So basically what I'm getting is I should just trash those tire, and wheels, and get new one? cause it's not worth it?
Also how what I go about boiling or backing them? (since I have to buy new ones, might as well give it a try!!

Its possible, but takes a lot of work and a lot of prying. I bought a little bottle of debonder, I used a mix of that and Acetone to pry 5 tires and wheels apart. Next time I'd try boiling or baking them to be honest, cause the de-bonding route was long and tiring...

how do u bake them (what temp, and how long?) and boiling, do i just throw them into a pot? and also for how long?

My opinion? Put more holes in the tires. They already have some in them, this is what allows them to be so soft. You're going to get water in them again anyway so this would be a permanent way to allow them to drain and dry faster.

I have boiled many tires and it works. Sometimes you may have to boil them for 1 hr+ but they got off and I reused the foams as well

dont try to unglue them, you will ruin the tires or the rims. just drill 2 or 3 SMALL holes in the center of the tread of the tire, hold it off the ground, and throttle up, the water will spin out the holes.

(you would know this if you RTFM, page 19. 2. The wheels have small holes molded in to allow air to enter and exit the tire during normal running. Water will enter these holes and get trapped inside the tires if holes are not cut in the tires. Cut two small holes (4mm or 3/16” diameter) in each tire. Each hole should be near the tire centerline, 180 degrees apart.}

hey I did RTFM, and I know what is going to enter, I was thinking of putting the tire inflation kit on them if I can get them unglued, that way I can just fill them with air and not have to worry about water in them!!

ive had much success with baking tires off the rim. leave em in the oven for an hour to an hour and a half at 200 degrees. that should get the meat to really fall off the bones. also the active chemical in ca debonder is nitromethane, it says so on the back of the bottle.

+1 after a tire gluing session I use a small splash of nitro fuel on a shop rag and it cleand the CA right off my fingers... also good for cleaning the rubber before re-gluing... nitro instanytly softens the ca for the most part...

+1 on the trick of putting some holes in your rubber. The water will get flung right out!

Yeah that's what I ended up do, drilling 4 holes in the tire!!

Boiling tires is easy and works great. This is the method I use and it's NEVER an issue.

Fill a pot with water and turn the heat on it.

Next put a cap full of bleach in the water.

Next, put in the tire.

Now put the lid on the pot and let it come to a boil; once it's boiling it'll take about fifteen minutes for the tire to be ready to be removed.

Pull the tire out of the water and pull the tire carefully from the rim(use plastic gloves while doing this or you'll get burned).

Put the tire back in the water and let it boil for about 2-5 minutes again and then the other side will pull off.

The key to doing this is working QUICKLY once you've pulled the tire out of the water or they don't pull off as easy when it starts to cool.

Keep in mind this will ruin a chrome finish on a wheel, but it doesn't do ANYTHING to white, yellow, or other solid molded in color wheels. You can save some big bucks over time using this method. Tires and rims rack up some cost quickly, especially 1/8th scale!!

If you are racing yes, but for us regular just run your car when you get a chance guy, I don't think I have actually ever used up a set of tire, accept for the Duratrax evader bow ties it came with, but If I ever get a chance to I might try to boil a tire, that I am getting rid of just to see how it would work!!

Hey I'm going to deny it, I did runn it in the river, it was mad fun, but he was the first one to go in!!!!:D
Hey at least we now know that the summit can cross a 5 foot deep body of water (till the wheels fill up!! Then it starts to sink)
It was a officail water proof test of the Sumit, and so far it passed!!!:D

We always use a leather punch to put two or four
holes in our new off-road tires before we mount
them to keep the water problem from happening.
You should do this if you buy pre-mounts also.

I have always boiled my tires off and never had an issue. The chrome did get ruined but I painted the rims black. All I can say is it works.

might give it a try i just thought that the heat could possibly distort the wheels!!
