Do you hate it when...
People watch or follow you when you play R/C car? To me, I hate it because I'm not the kind of person who likes to show off or being centre of attention.
I played E-Firestorm Flux today at a local school field, and there are always some kids there. Everytime when I play the car, they just come up to me asking me questions... It's just annoying. I might just stop going there and find somewhere else. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
You will always turn heads,Its better to just roll with it.

Guess you cant avoid people coming over and watch you drive and asking you "stupid questions"(which for them are of pure curiosity),you will always get their attention either you want it or not. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
No, I don't hate it. In fact I find it a great time to introduce new people to the hobby. I defy a single person who is in the hobby to say truthfully that they did not go up and watch someone run an rc when they were new to it. That's how I got into cars and boats. Hell, I've been running nitro models for 44 years and to this day, if I see them running or flying somewhere, you better believe I still stop and watch. Just last week I came across a flying field and killed 45 minutes or so watching those guys fly.

RE: Do you hate it when...
I dont mind an audience, so long as they watch and dont get in the way and stuff.
When kids ask me to drive my RC, I always say no. When they continue to ask, I get annoyed and will sometimes even pack up and leave. Now, when a kid asks me to do something stupid with my RC like jump it over him, I do not even say a thing and immediately pack up and leave. I refuse to be part of anything that can endanger a child. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
i hate it when people take pictures and yes its happend a few times. i dont mind them asking questions or whatever. i just dont want some wack job with my picture.
|
RE: Do you hate it when...
i find somewhere where there's nobody to interupt me, or if i'm testing an RC in my street, kids will watch, but as long as they just watch i'm okay with that.
|
RE: Do you hate it when...
Yea. I hate when they don't listen when you tell them to stay out of your way.
|
RE: Do you hate it when...
it bothers me because when i run i relax and tune everything out then i get the "how much is one of thoes how fast does it go do you wanna sell it"and i cant concentrate on my rc cause people wont shut up
|
RE: Do you hate it when...
I know what you mean. If you go outside to enjoy something your good at, or something that's amazing to some people (like RC cars) you feel like you wonder if people think your showing off.
But hey, you can't worry about that sort of thing. I say if you've got it, flaunt it! :D |

RE: Do you hate it when...
I got involved in this by watching some one else. I asked a few questins and now I have been involved and owned my own car sine 1994.

RE: Do you hate it when...
As long as everyone is safe I like an audience.

RE: Do you hate it when...
I have to admit, I too got started by watching and asking questions. But I got started by watching at the track, and because it was the track, I only asked questions AFTER the driver was done running. I didnt get in the way of the RCs because only the turn marshals were allowed on the track, I didnt bother the drivers while they were driving or while they were in the pits because again, only the drivers are allowed on the platform, and I was respectful of the pitmen when they were busy prepping their RC for the next race.
This is something kids have no respect for out when bashing up and down a field or open parking lot. They pester you when they need to simply sit back and watch and then wait for the proper opportunity to ask. I would have no problems with that, but unfortunately, the kids I have come across always want me to do stupid crap. A kid the other day asked me to race my RC down the street against him on a bike. That is a no-no on so many levels. The RC I was driving was a gasser which is a big RC to begin with. If it went in front of him or he turned and his front wheel went over it, it would have been bad news for the RC, but potentially life threatening for the kid as he would have tumbled off of his bike and possibly hit his head on the way down. I told him "no" to about his race idea and packed up and left. He might feel I was stuck-up, but again, I do not want to endanger a child. I sound like a serious sour puss about this, it's just that I have had too many kids ask me to do stupid stuff that I simply wont tolerate it anymore. And I am not packing up my gear to be a jerk, I know how kids are. They ask and ask and insist to the point that you have to either be stern and say it is unsafe or simply leave. I choose to leave because I seriously think yelling at a kid is not the right thing to do. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
I got started in RC by watching races at a local track and bought a used XXX buggy. The only time I drive my cars (not including the track) is when I am breaking in my engine or when I decide to pull out my older traxxas models to drive in my street. If you Go to a public park and think nobody will look at your cars you are sadly mistaken. If you want kids to get into the hobby, you make a MS Word flyer. Give the location of the track/hobby shop, how much they cost and how fast they go. Easiest way out in my opinion. How old are the kids everyone is talking about?

RE: Do you hate it when...
I don't mind, spread the obsession! I do make it a point to let elementary school aged kids where they can and cannot stand. I've left too because of kids who were placing themselves in harms way, most kids, though seem pretty respectful.

RE: Do you hate it when...
I don't have a problem with the people that want to watch or ask questions.
I also don't like being a show off tho so I can understand that. What I have a problem with is the people who cause problems for me.. like calling the police, telling me to leave, complaining in general, Trying to steal my stuff... I really try my best to run my car where nobody will be.. Like industrial areas at 7pm on a weekday... |
RE: Do you hate it when...
I know that letting people to watch will get them into R/C hobby possibly, but I prefer people just to stay away from me and stay quiet.
The kids over there just come up near me, asking me "Jump that ramp", "Can you show me full throttle", etc, etc, all the time which I can't stand. When I was little, I got into the R/C hobby by watching others but I didn't being disrespectful like those silly kids. I just stand back and watch. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
i used to get annoyed when people would walk up and ask questions and crowd around me, so now when ever i see someone start to walk over i usually send my 5B at them full tilt. once they hear how loud the exhaust is and get showered with grass they go away.

RE: Do you hate it when...
It was my dads fault that I got into the hobby, thanx dad. When I was a kid(I'm now 38) my dad was in the army(English) with the R.E.M.E(Royal Elictrical Mechanical Engineers) and he had to build model aero planes for the anti aircraft guys to shoot down. He took me with him to the shooting range and one of the pilots asked if I would like to have a go at flying, WOW what a day I had. Really, it was fun, I must have crashed 5-6 planes and nobody gave a darn, then I had a go on a Browning 30 cal machine gun trying to shoot down a plane:-) wooohooo great fun also, I fired of 2 boxes of ammo and didnt hit a thing but it was still good fun, especialy for a kid of 12 years of age, that was a big banger, ratatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatta:-)I still aint much of a pilot but my shooting skills have gotn alot better. Nowdays I like to drive my buggy though. Still get a kick just thinking about it. When I was with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment we also used drones as shooting targets.Have fun, I know I do.

RE: Do you hate it when...
P.S the only people who watched were soldiers and they were all really cool men, more like grown up kids with big boys toys and always had a smile from one ear to the other. No wonder, with the toys they get to play with.

RE: Do you hate it when...
The kids that come up to me generally are around 12yrs and younger. The teens are much more respectful, and generally very few teens come up to watch. I dont know why, but I guess teens might perceive RCs as geeky.
I do notice the older kids (10, 11, 12) are much more respectful and I can tell them all about the hobby, and moreover, the responsibilities. These are the kids that are the next prospects for getting into the hobby. They are shocked initially at how dangerous our RCs can be, and they are also shocked about how much they cost, even the cheap chinese clones, but I try to break it all down to them, the good, the bad, and the ugly, so that they can seriously consider if RCs are something they really want to do. It's like learning to play a guitar: Yes it is fun, but you also have to have responsibility and discipline otherwise you will wreck the RC or you will play that guitar horribly. |
RE: Do you hate it when...
and that jim is a thing a lot of kids dont have-responsibility and discipline.

RE: Do you hate it when...
I have people watch me run all the time if I am out running in a public place.. I've not had any problems with them at all.. Sure they ask the same questions.. How fast, How much and can I try it.. I respectfully answer them and I don't mind at all.. I don't let them drive it but I will show them wat the trucks can do... I let my son's friend try my Rustler VXL once and he lost if and hit a curb.. No more of that..
You have to remember that you were a kid once and were fascinated by these cars running around.. I know I was... I'm 46 now and don't mind talking to kids or even their parents.. when the subject of cost comes around, most parents are surprised at the price but when you explain to them the difference between these and the Walmart/Radio shack cars and especially show them the difference, they understand... I am much more cautious with my Helicopters and my Baja 5B... when someone comes up and asks about them. I will immediately land the Helicopter or stop the Baja.. They are too big and dangerous to fool around with... |
