Default Can I use older AM radio? Where to get batteries?

I've got an old Futaba Magnum FP-3PG AM radio. [link=http://www.southsideracing.com/downloads/manuals/Futaba_3PG_Manual.pdf]See manual here.[/link] It's always worked fine, great setup features, etc.

I read somewhere that older (pre 1992) AM radios should/or could NOT be used. Is this true? Can this radio be converted to FM?

The transmitter batteries are non-standard. Where could I find batteries for the transmitter?

Thanks.
