Default New Tx+old Rx=Low range

I just recently upgraded the radio in my RTR Ntc3. I purchased a Futaba 2PL. The radio is great - lots of adjustments etc. Problem is that I tried to use a very old Futaba 75MHz receiver with it and I noticed signifigantly reduced range. Somewhere like 30% of normal. I felt the car go unresponsive after only like 40 yards. Could it be the mix of a new Tx and and an old Rx that's causing the low range or could it be the crystal set that I am using? These crystals I'm using are from my old radio so I suspect they may also have something to do with the problem. Should I replace the old receiver, the crystal set or both?

Thanks,
