Default Sightly off topic - Wireless Spycams

This is RC related so hopefully you won't mind me asking in here.

I want to install a little spycam in my car but the last time I did it the range wasn't great.

Would fitting a longer aerial help?

Spycam is ine of the cheap jobbies from Ebay.

Problem is not all spy cams are created equal. The cheap ones are just that cheap. I have one and the range is pretty good, but I do not know where it came from. A friend I know gave it to me for Christmas. He got it off EBay but not sure who the seller was.

I think it also matters how good the batteries you are using are. Mine did not work well with cheap batteries but with new duracells it worked a lot better. As for picture quality the amount of light made every bit of difference for me as well.

The image quality isn't brilliant but good enough.

Like you say, fresh batteries are a must and ideally the receiver should have a 12v supply.

75m is about the max range if I run without the body shell, range drops significantly with the shell on so am going to lengthen the aerial and see if it helps.

Using it in a 1:6 scale so 75m soon comes and goes he he.

Not that anyone's interested but longer aerial has indeed improved things. Better reception and no loss of signal.

What you do? Open it up and replaced the wire?

Yeah, just removed the original 4" aerial and soldered a longer one in it's place.

Seems so, maybe if we do some vids the idea will catch on? Marder cartwheeling across a field anyone?

How have you got yours mounted?[img][/img]

I now need to get something I record to my PC with. My friend gave me the camera and I just went around the house with it shown on the TV. Very cool - Drive my car in and out of other rooms with watching the tv.

I just taped it on for a test and then took it back off. Later I will be getting something to record to my PC and then I will be doing more with it.

If you plan to mount one of the mini-spy camera on your RC car, get a short length of antenna tubing to run the antenna wire up through and cement to the side of the camera. With the antenna up, you will get better reception at a longer distance without interference.
If your PC has RCA in jacks and a good capture card with LOTS of free space on your hard drive, you should be able to capture a few minutes on the PC.

I'm using a USB Win TV Go gadget to get the image to the laptop at the moment.

A camcorder with AV in for the receiver seems much more practical though.

Can't wait to see the footage mate, a few confirmed kills will add character to your movies

My car is in bits awaiting upgrades but will post vids soon.
