Default bad battery or battery tray

I was adjusting my steering servo and left the tx(brand new 3pm) on, on the table close by and would move it every so often to check for smooth operation and no binding. I got the servo working good and by chance, picked up the tx and it was super hot. Opened it up and the battery had melted the tray. SO I don't know if the tray shorted or if it was the battery.(nimh aa cells)
