The fast easy answer, amps! You can draw more amperage from a NiCD/NiMH battery than you can from an alkaline battery, you can draw 30 times the rated capacity of a sub-C size NiMH/NiCD battery.

I would say the biggest advantage is that a 5 cell RX pack has a higher voltage than a 4 cell alkaline pack.
A nicad/nimh battery fully charged is about 1.35-1.45v so that X 5 is 6.75-7.25v, and when it gets down to 6 volts (resting), its just about time to recharge.
An alkaline cell is about 1.6v when new, that X 4 is only 6.4v, and that starts dropping as soon as you turn the car on....

So when a receiver pack is just about to die on power I still get 6 volts? I never built a battery pack. I wanted to get some packs from Cheapbatterypacks.com.

well, the resting voltage is higher than the voltage when its actualy in use... when it gets around 6 volts resting its time to recharge, but it you use it, the voltage will drop quickly to around 3.5 or so.... but up untill that point, you will still have around 6 volts

i've been using a 1200mah 7.4v lipo on my mgt. no voltage drops and i can usually go a couple of days w/o recharging.

yes you would need a voltage regulator, though I have heard that someone (i think several companies actually) is coming out with servos made to run on a 2 cell lipo.... The extra voltage gives mad torque and speed from the specs i have seen...

I made custom box out of a 4 AA battery holder and 2 AA battery holder. both enclosed. get's full 6v.
I don't want to have to lug around multiple chargers. just be done with 1 8AA charger from powerex
someone needs to come out with enclosed 5 cell AAA holder or AA holder.
If they come out with 7.2 servo's. though. I could just go with enclosed 6 Cell holder.. that's be great.
