ME-410 Build

Next project is the ME-410 Hornet. It will be RCCA Class 2948 Scale Combat legal with 60" wingspan and two ASP.15 swinging MA 8x3's for power

I have to admit that I am quite taken by twins. They require the extra mile, but the end product is well worth it. Making minimum weight of 4 # is a challenge but even at almost
5 # these birds fly great. I just completed the British version of the Hornet and now the Luftwaffe's turn. :D

I used the metal template method employing a printed scale drawing glued to a shaped aluminum template pattern. I then used my hotwire "scroll saw" table to cut the fuse and nacelles by following the edges of the aluminum template.

I used a carbon fiber arrow shaft for strength in the fuse, hotwired some ligthening holes and glued together with gorilla glue......very strong and very light.

The nacelles are foam with arrow shaft and HDPE engine mount.....ready to glue.

......and fuse and wing completed and ready for tape and covering.

thats awesome Dane! keep up the good work!

how are the ASP's working out?

DaneMcGee 06-24-2012 03:17 PM

RE: ME-410 Build

Andy, the ASP's are running good and strong. I see zero difference between ASP and Magnums.......identical engines.

RE: ME-410 Build

Maiden:

AUW 4# , 2 ASP .15's turning 17.5K on 15% Byron.

Flew out of hand. No pitch, no launch, no nuthin. Just droppped the airplane and straight away she went. Perfect flying airplane with zero bad tendancies.....best flying warbird I've ever built. CG was spot on.
Turns tight and because it is at min weight it loses no more speed in the turns than my mustangs..... turns almost as tight. On 100% elevator throws it will loop till you get tired of looping.
Glide is like a SSC bird.

To say I'm "happy, happy, happy" is an understatement.

This has been an outstanding build thread..!
The plane looks fantastic and you've shown how simple it can be done.
That Oracal looks like a colored version of clear vinyl we used to call Fascal. I never could find any way to get past the "middle man" when buying the Fascal, so it was fairly expensive buying it from "The Bear"...who was a guy who sold C/L combat wares years ago.

Oracal 64 sign vinyl is available fom signwarehouse.com

They have a plenty of colors to choose from so finding a color to make you new warbird come to life should not be a problem,,,,and the best part is NO PAINTING and fuel proof.

RE: ME-410 Build

thats so cool Dane, congrats on the fine maiden!!

do I see a mosqito in your future?

DaneMcGee 07-19-2012 01:36 PM

RE: ME-410 Build

Thanks Andy. A Mossy would be cool however the DeHav Hornet is probably as close as I will get.
I will build a P-38 at some point just because of the cool factor.

My next will be another 410.....It flies too dang good,

draftman1 07-19-2012 02:44 PM

RE: ME-410 Build

Do you have a picture that shows fuel tank placement?

Add counter rotating engines and propellers ??
I don't think these little $43 engines come in a counter rotating version and RCCA Combat Class 2948 requires MA 8x3 props on all .15 size engines which only come in one version.
I really don't think it is needed as I have flown it with one engine successfully.

There are no fuel tanks. I run bladders on all my combat airplanes......bladder compartment is under wing saddle area in the wing and can be seen in the pic above of the wing before covering
