New to Combat - Need Plane

A couple of seasonal flyers in my club fly combat. I think the one guy flies something built from a rain gutter?

Anyway, they are not here yet and I want to prepare to join them when they return this year.

I know little about combat planes, other than they are small (.25 to .36 size, these guys aren't flying requlation or anything, just for fun).

I am looking for a suggestion on a good one to buy. Hoping there is a good ARF version out there. I would like it to take standard flight pack gear since I have that laying around. I will need to buy a motor and plane.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I bet your buddies are flying some type of SPAD. Check out www.spadtothebone.com . You should be able to find someone on that site who can provide you with an ARF. There are other designs out there that are much more durable, but if your buds are flying spads, you are probably better off flying what they have. The spads fly good, are easy to build, and are fairly durable. You will have a blast. You can also check out www.rccombat.com to find out more than you ever wanted to know about rc combat.

The Predator is by far THE best club combat plane I have ever seen. It's very tough if you don't over power it. A plain bearing .40 or .42(stock) is a GREAT engine for it, try an APC 10x4 prop. The guy I fly club combat with had one last for 2.5 years and a HELL of a lot of rounds of combat.:D

If you are in the Orlando, Melbourne, or Cocoa Beach area I can point you to some guys that are great modelers, nice guys, and very knowledgeable about combat planes.

You are right that most combat is flown with .15 to .30 engines. The most popular class is Open B, which is up to a .30 engine, with max airframe weight dry of 3.5 lbs.

Good luck.

I built a spad once. At our club we don't fly any classes. We just have renegade combat. 36" wingspan .25 size engine. Anyone want pics Email me.

Wow, a limit of 36" on the span for a .25 powered plane? Those things have got to be rockets.

It certainly is. Foam too. Small wings toward the outside. Get this, the whole elevator moves so you need like 1/4 inch throw to make it go up. I had about 3 times that and oversized alerions. I flew it on the first time at full rates, and everyone including me wonder how I got it back. Before I finally crashed it, I was flying it at 60% rates. These things can roll like you wouldn't believe, they are so cool. A great, cheap, and awesome airplane.

many of us fly 36" wings in our weekly sunday combat. But most fly with .15's, some fly with .25's, but they don't have as much as fun as the .15's. 36" wings are a blast!!

Sure do!

Here is one of Tony Sedlaks birds after "a couple" of sessions. Kinda reminds me of those B17's returning with all that flak damage during ww2

What is the body made of?

thojo 09-28-2003 08:27 PM

RE: New to Combat - Need Plane

Its 3/4" Aluminum Angle, 8ft, .050" or 1/16" thick from Home Depot or Lowes.

Here is how the engine mount is ummmm, mounted..

and the tail...

There is a foam pylon that fits between the rails to hold the wing, and I use 4 6/32" bolts for the rubber band tie downs, like the HOR's

Man, I don't know; I like my planes to be at least somewhat attractive. ;) Guess you can tell I'm into scale in a big way! :D I think JK Aerotech is an excellent compromise of looks to pure functionality when it comes to combat.

I can whip out 4 or 5 of these babies by the time you finish your JKAeroTech bird. For Combat - Form, Function and $$$ is a beautiful thing to me.

You have a choice, you can either spend all your time building, or spend it flying. I fly combat every sunday, so beauty aint part of my equation...

I am getting out of the hobby and am willing to sell you 3 planes at a good price. I have 2 battle floyds and 1 WWII 1/12 scale HELLCAT. I will also email you, email me at [email protected] if interested.

Combat Addict, that's a pretty decent looking Raptor.

Of course, the ones I have seen have been flown by Jimbo, and after a round against the Cajun they are not that pretty and not normally still in one piece.:) :D

BTW, the sidewinder of Thojo's is a very good flier and tough.

It is pretty because I never flew it in combat. Destroyed it all by myself. No help required.
