WHAT TO USE?

I am thinking of building a SPAD the "gnat" model and I am wondering what you guys think I should use for a engine(size and brand) and why if possible. Thanks for your input all!
:D

RE: WHAT TO USE?

I built one this year and find it a bit underpowered with the specified .15 engine. Rather than scrap it I have been thinking about putting a .25 on it for next year.

Try a .15 ASP Yellow Jacket....
You wont miss a beat with that engine .... Even though SCC rules says the engine can run up to only 1750 rpm .. you will find this little engine is a major powerhouse than the .15 LA or Mag 15 ...
Price is just right and you can find one at Towerhobbies and other hobbie shops...

Doug! Welcome to RCU!

Really, you can't go wrong with any of the engines mentioned so far. I've only got Magnum .15s myself, but you really can't go wrong with any of the engines mentioned so far.

Just don't expect any of them to turn 17,500 right off the bat. You'll tear up the sleeve and piston. Ask me how I know. Better yet, don't :) Work 'em in slow and gradual. I flew the engine in my #1 plane all summer, in our weekly practice sessions and in competition, and it just hit 17,500 the last time I flew it.

RE: WHAT TO USE?

TwoStroke, 95% of the SSC flyers use OSLA or Magnums .15s with good success. The Leo.15 is also a super engine. Any of them will do a good job.

Your problem is the plane. The Gnat will not be close to competitive in SSC combat. It's a fun plane to fly for sport or combat and easy to build and would be good for a one design club combat event, but it's just a target towing a streamer in open SSC.

Good luck
