Combat Streamer
 

I have to make up a bunch of combat streamers for our upcoming Fly-In, in which we will have combat. I have several questions?
What is best to use for the streamer itself? Length of lead line and length of streamer? Also what is the width of the streamer? One other thing, what is the best way to attach the line to the streamer without having it tear loose?

We use 20'string and 20' streamer. We get it from HatTrick. There's a link to his site on the RCCA board. www.scalecombat.com
If it's not a sanctioned event you can use any streamers you want. Dark colored is best. Just fold it over a couple times on the end and tie a knot in it.

As Jimbo stated, the NSCC rules use 20' of string and 20' of streamer. RCCA rules 5' string (minimum) and 30' of streamer. The New England Gremlin rules use 20' of string and 20' 2" wide streamer (party streamer from anywhere).

One other thing, what is the best way to attach the line to the streamer without having it tear loose?

If you're pre-rolling the streamers to the length you'll be using, hold them rolled with small tabs of masking tape. The masking tape can then be used by the pilots to knot the string around for a solid hold.

General Rule of Thumb
 

30' streamer and 20' leader.
You can use a tool made of an bolt (1/4-20 and as long as you can find with threads all the way to the head) thru a piece of ply that is about 8" long and two pegs about 6" apart (3" on either side of the bolt. The bolt sticking thru opposite side of the ply as the pegs are out of. The bolt can then be put in a drill and used as a winder. You can then count the turns to get the number of feet needed and several can be given to YOUR HELPERS.

The streamers can then easily be pulled off the winder and a rubber band used to secure them.

I have been to meets that the leaders were already tied and those that the leaders were not already tied. there seemed no difference in the number of lost streamers (none) so it is your choice and not guilt trips required.

As a fast rule of thumb the average arm spam of a man is 6' so five arm spans on the streamer and three on the leader and you wont see any difference in the air.

Hat Trick Denecrepe or Forestry Tape
 

I need to make some streamers up soon. Which is the better streamer? Hat Trick "denecrepe", or the Forestry tape? I am worried about the forestry tape not breaking with wing strikes, and having a hard time seeing it at 3/4 wide........ I'm curious of those who has used these product at what your feedback is on them.
