G10 Question
 

I would like to try using G10 (G-10)for a body but I have a few questions that I am certain others have already resolved:

1. What thickness is normally used for bodies? (I suspect .25")

2. One picture looked like the G10 was being used to sheet over an inner structure. Is this the normal way it is used?

3. If it is .25" that would seem to be too thin for mounting the wing securely. It would seem to need some form of wing saddle. Could someone explain how your mounting wings using G10. Pictures would be great.

4. How are people cutting this stuff?

5. What do you use for gluing it?

This stuff is pretty heavy. You'd have a boat anchor with a fuse made out of .25 thick stuff... .031" or .064" thick leaning toward the thinner...

A.J.'s Avengers use a Basewood core with the G10 sheeted on either side...

2" x 8" long Lexan plate screwed into the basewood fuse with servo screws. Doubled underneath the plate with square dowels against the fuse. At least thats how A.J. did it at one time...

4. How are people cutting this stuff?

I use a bandsaw. The dust is toxic, so eye and breathing filters should be used. Or hold your breath!!!

5. What do you use for gluing it?

Poly U glue...

It will wear out band saw blades in a hurry. I have found heavy duty scisors work great, and then use a belt sander to clean up the edges. It will also eat belts fairly quickly.
I think the g10 I use is around .027 inches thick.
Instead of lexan use the same g10 screwed into the bass wood. lexan will crack very easily, the g10 will not
polyurethane works ok, but medium ca is about the best. Epoxy is almost worthless. Be sure to scuff the surface of the g10 before glueing.

I had looked at pictures of the advengers but since I knew nothing about G10 I was not sure what I was looking at. I'm going to check around and see if it can be bought locally otherwise I will just mail order some.
