It would be a lot faster for you to take a look at rccombat.com than it would be for use to tell you on the forum. I can tell you one thing, it's as much fun as you can have with your pants on.

Quick explaination:

The Art of removing an oppenents streamer from his/her airplane at speeds between 45 and 90 mph, all while protecting your streamer from the other 5 to six planes up with you at the same time.

Hill202,
I see you are from the Atlanta area. There is a combat contest this Saturday at the Hilltop Flyers field NE Atlanta. Check out www.hilltopflyers.com to see who is coming and get directions.

Try the Slasher. Tower Hobbies has them. They are very fast and easy to build.

Combat planes are built to try to minimize the damage from a mid-air or other mishap. Some planes are more durable than others, but all of them are far more able to take a hit than your typical sport plane that you'd see at your field on a typical day.

It is a huge amount of fun, and it is very challenging. A lot of people who see combat for the first time assume that it's all luck or blindly flying through a crowd, hopeing for a cut. Of course it doesn't actually work that way.

If you looked at the RCCombat.com site or some of the other sources out there, then you already found out about the planes. In case you didn't, there are several differnet classes of RC Combat, with different rules about the airplane and engine.

Out of curiosity...

Is there a determined length of the streamer to start out at?

What dictates when you're "killed"?

RE: What exactly is combat?

30ft of streamer attached to the plane with 5ft of kite string.

RE: What exactly is combat?

There is no "kill" in the AMA/RCCA rules. You keep flying even if you loose your entire streamer. Also, all cuts count the same, so if you take just a few inches off the end of an opponents streamer with your prop, that's 100 points. If you take the whole streamer in one pass, that's 100 points. (so it's actually better to just take a little, so you an come back later for seconds).

RE: What exactly is combat?

Cool thanks.

Can someone point out where I can find a set of rules/regulations for combat? Is the RCCA affiliated with the AMA?

My club is AMA sanctioned, and myself and the prez/a few other guys are tossing the idea of doing it, but I think we'd want to follow the regulations.

Also I saw an ad for Lanier's slasher and ripper, are these any good? I've got a .25 FX laying around that could use a home - or do most guys overpower them?

Thanks.

RE: What exactly is combat?

Glad you guys are getting some combat interest. Here is the RCCA site with the rules and a lot more! http://www.rccombat.com/rcca.asp

I can't speak for or against the Lanier ships as I scratch build my stuff, but they are probably a good way to get started and that .25 FX is just what you want!

Combat is a ton of fun, you guys will love it :D

RE: What exactly is combat?

The RCCA (Radio Control Combat Assoc) is an AMA SIG (special interest group). So, it works with the AMA on combat issues.

The RCCA has several classes of combat with different rules about engine and airplane size.

The .25FX is the most popular engine for Open B class combat, which allows up to a .30 size enigne. The Lanier plane you mention is designed for that class. I haven't flown one myself, but I understand that it's a pretty good design.

There are some RCCA guys in CO right now, so if you hold a contest, and want guys to come to your event from other clubs, be sure to go to the RCCA website and let people know about your contest.

I did not know you had to keep your pants on??
I've been flying the Lanier Ripper with a LA 15 SSCombat loads of fun.
More fun is the ripper with a 25 on it.

what happens if the streamer gets tangeled around your prop and you go deadstick

The streamer is just crepe paper and gets shredded by the prop if it comes near it. However, the string can and does (on very rare occasions) get wrapped around the prop shaft. This isn't a problem with light-weight cotton string are used. The only time I've seen string cause problems is when using nylon string (VERY BAD!) or heavy cotton string.

RE: What exactly is combat?

Once in a while, you can get even weak string wrapped around the front bearing of an engine. It's annoying, but easily fixed in the field. It's most common as a result of a mid-air, but it can also happen if you just hit the string itself. As Darin said, it doesn't happen often enough to be a big deal, most of use just look at it as just another hazzard of combat.

Eightball252003 -- you are falling in with the kids from the other side of the tracks!! [:@] These are the noisy hormonal types of the modelling fraternity, who beat their chests & flaunt tough-guy names like Headshot, & Lightning. [:'(] It demonstrates that they are still in the developmental stages of their lives, where the guy with the biggest ribbon around his d!ck is the champ . They sometimes marry very tough ladies with names like IceEagle [8D], who can kick their butts in the sky, as well as in the bedroom [&o].

You would be well advised to avoid the notariety and shame that comes with this extroverted perversion, & stick to flying nice quiet planes like extreme-speed prop planes :eek:or even something a bit tamer like jets[&:].
